A few days ago I had the pleasure of participating in a joint venture sandcastle building event with the Orange County AIA and the Southern California Chapter of the ASLA. You should have been there! Well over 100 astute professionals shed their button down collars and broke out the sand buckets to take part in this event. The reason you’re reading about it now is three-fold:

First, it was a fantastic step to solidify relations between the AIA Architects and the ASLA Landscape Architects. There was no formal competition and there weren’t any awards. Actually everyone there deserves an award. There was a real feeling of support and unity between these busy builders. Even in the one planning meeting that I attended the spirit of participation was clearly evident. The second fold, so to speak, lies in the s’ tremendous amount of positive publicity this event generated within the community.

The ASLA has truely made ground in it’s attempt to promote the Profession of Landscape Architecture. This sand castle building event made great strides in this direction. You should have seen the looks on the faces of both the young and the old.

What’s a Landscape Architect? What is Land Planning all about? These were some of the questions asked and answered on the beach at Corona del Mar. As Landscape Architects become more involved in community events the value and prestige of this profession will increase geometrically. The third reason lies in the meeting of old and new friends.

One of the most pleasurable benefits of publishing a magazine for the Landscape Architectural Profession is the comradery a found between all members of this profession. At The Landscape Architect and Specifier News we participate in a wide range of events throughout the year. At these events it continually amazes me at the way competing firms and individuals work and play together. As the profession grows it is important to keep these amiable attitudes towards our peers. Believe me, cooperation and respect throughout the profession makes a positive impact on both the profession and the publics conception of the profession.

Keep up the good work ASLA! All that hard work is beginning to pay off. We look forward to working with you in the future to help make your goals a reality.
