George is on a cruise off the coast of Alaska this week and asked me to fill in for him. My name is Marty Smith, the new Editor-in-chief of the magazine. I started on with George when he was just starting a few years ago. One day he called me in Seattle and asked what I was doing, and said that he was starting a magazine and would I come down and help him out? I had just proposed marriage to my girlfriend (now my wife) the night before, but I said I’d come down for a few weeks. Those first few weeks were something else. We stumbled, staggered and messed around and didn’t quite know what we were doing, but we had a definite goal in mind. That was to fill a market niche by creating a magazine that met the informational needs of the working Landscape Architect. Seeing as how George isn’t around this week, I can tell you the truth about how the magazine really started. I was the one who started the magazine. I made all the first phone calls while George paced the floor throwing out one idea after another. Then, once the situation was in control, I left for Seattle to make sure my little construction company hadn’t run away to another state. Now I’ve jumped back into the thick of things and am enjoying myself thoroughly. Our goal is to become the best current news source in the Landscape Architectural market. Along these lines I’ve done research into a subject that seems to be on a lot of LA’s minds these days?EUR??,,????'??+that is the issue of sunsetting and repeal of licenses. I’ve found out some interesting things and hope you enjoy my article. I also hope you find interest in the article on specifying for Playground Safety. It has been a pleasure meeting the people in the green industry over the past few months, and I’m looking forward to dealing with the issues most concerning Landscape Architects, and meeting you in person. Any comments or suggestions you might have would be appreciated. Write or call me at the magazine; I’d like to talk to you.
