Observations:

By George Schmok

Building permits continued to be strong in the fourth quarter of ‘88, according to a recent report from the California Building Industry Association. Based on information from the Construction Industry Research Board, the high October/November rates, which were higher than any level (excluding 12/86) since late 1977 through mid-1978, were due to predictions of increased interest rates in early 1989.

A big thanks to the San Diego Chapter of the ASLA for welcoming us at its annual kick-off celebration. You’ll be hearing more about the SD/ASLA as they prepare for the 1990 National ASLA Convention.

The big winner in our editorial proofing contest was Professor Donald Molnar of Purdue University, who received the magazine under his door at the Nat’l ASLA and promptly called us from his hotel room. It was worth the long distance charges as he pointed out a total of 32 errors. Ouch!!! The other winners are listed in the ‘Letters’ section. Remember, the contest is still on but you must be the first to spot an error to win the prize.

Has anybody seen Rick Hume? Maybe he’s still in Hawaii. Or maybe we’ll see him at the CCLA Conference in Yosemite, March 2-5.

I hope those of you at the International Erosion Control Associations (IECA) Conference in Vancouver, B.C. enjoyed getting this issue hot off the press! The IECA has become a viable member of the landscape architectural profession and should be consulted when faced with problems of erosion and slope management.

As you will probably notice, there is a new event in LASN. It’s name is LANDSCAPE LIGHTING. Our intent is to shed some ?EUR??,,????'??light” on this aesthetically enhancing and progressively beneficial area of landscape architecture. Landscape architects have always had an influence on technological enhancements, such as energy efficiency, and continue to bridge the gap between the natural and the necessary. We hope you enjoy the section and look forward to your correspondence. Until then, take care and God bless.
