CHINO HILLS, Calif.– Within a couple of hours a drab, dreary crosswalk can be transformed into a streetscape of beauty. That?EUR??,,????'???s because of the technology using Duratherm, developed by Street Print Pavement Texturing, a subsidiary of Integrated Paving Concepts.

On Aug. 10 in front of Oak Ridge Elementary School in Chino Hills, Calif., a crew installed a chartreuse thermoplastic material into the placed impressions.

?EUR??,,????'??We started doing this in 1992 in response to the market needing a decorative solution for high-traffic applications,?EUR??,,????'?? said Cleve Stordy, manager of government markets for Integrated Paving Concepts. ?EUR??,,????'??We developed Street Print Duratherm.?EUR??,,????'??

The crew applies a plastic template which is pressed onto the hot asphalt with a vibrator plate compactor.

After the asphalt is heated a vibrator plate compactor is used to press the template down, said Stordy. The thermo plastic material is placed into the ground. The result is a decorative surface that is highly durable, fast to install and open to traffic, fully ADA compliant, snowplow friendly with no maintenance burden.

?EUR??,,????'??We?EUR??,,????'???ve developed over the years some nation-wide accredited applicators who are specially trained,?EUR??,,????'?? said Stordy. ?EUR??,,????'??In the last year and a half we?EUR??,,????'???ve installed more than 70,000 square feet in Los Angeles.?EUR??,,????'??

Other projects include the Canal Street reconstruction in Manhattan, N.Y., the airport in Frankfurt, Germany and numerous mall parking lots. At first 8-foot by 8-foot grids were installed. Now the company plans its first installation of a 12-foot by 12-foot grid in Salem, Ore.

Street Print Pavement Texturing developed the technology for the finished product, a beautiful streetscape design

?EUR??,,????'??Each project is custom-built so we need to plan ahead,?EUR??,,????'?? said Stordy. ?EUR??,,????'??We have a limited range now available, but plan on developing Herringbone and then linear patterns.?EUR??,,????'??

John Fagan, supervisor for the Chino Hills project, said his crews are busy every day making installations in Southern California.

?EUR??,,????'??Once my guys get set with a machine and do a few projects, they become a lot more effective,?EUR??,,????'?? said Fagan. ?EUR??,,????'??There?EUR??,,????'???s a lot of things involved in doing the installation, so I try to minimize the mistakes.?EUR??,,????'??

Using Ash Aids Environment

Because of the shortages of Portland cement, a potential increase in the use of fly ash is seen in the industry. If and when more fly ash is used to replace cement in concrete production there will be two big benefits to the environment; a reduction of 1.0 to 1.1 tons of greenhouse gases for every ton of fly ash used as a cement replacement; a savings of $320,000 in landfill disposal costs for every 85,000 tons of fly ash used making concrete. Great River Energy Products produces fly ash at its Coal Creek Station in North Dakota. This coal combustion bi product can be used in conjunction with cement to make concrete that is stronger and more durable than concrete made with cement alone. In replacing a portion of the cement, there is a concomitant reduction in the demand for cement. The cement shortage is an opportunity for concrete users to learn more about proper use of higher volumes of fly ash in their concrete that can enhance performance while replacing 30 percent or more of the Portland cement.
