BERKELEY, Calif.– Sproul Plaza, the historic gateway to the University of California, Berkeley will temporarily close as a major renovation project gets underway to improve plaza safety and accessibility.
The plaza, the venue for the Free Speech Movement and numerous rallies and demonstrations, will see the removal of aging asphalt replaced with concrete paver blocks.
Other details of the project include regrading the surface underneath where the asphalt currently sits, setting new tree rings, and replacing defective drain and sewer lines.
Consistent with the university?EUR??,,????'???s goal of using environmentally-friendly building practices, the pavers can be removed and replaced when future repair work or underground work is necessary. The project will also refurbish benches and kiosks within upper Sproul Plaza.
The project is scheduled to begin March 22 and be complete June 25.
?EUR??,,????'??Pedestrian safety and improved disabled accessibility are the driving reasons behind the upgrade,?EUR??,,????'?? explained Jim Horner, the campus landscape architect. ?EUR??,,????'??It has been over 40 years since the original asphalt was installed. Areas have settled, tree roots have heaved some sections of pavement, handrails are wobbly, roofs on the message boards are sagging, and the result is a less than ideal first impression of a world-class institution.?EUR??,,????'??
Private endowments and the Chancellor?EUR??,,????'???s Discretionary Fund are covering project costs.

It will be built in the Wadesboro, NC community off U.S. 52 in Anson County. The new plant will be located adjacent to the existing plant that opened in 2001.
