The Georgia Veterans Memorial Park in Rockdale County, Georgia, was conceived in 1996 to cultivate an understanding of the sacrifices made not only by the men and women protecting the freedoms we all enjoy, but also the families they left behind at home.
This exciting project was spearheaded by local citizens with both civilian and military backgrounds. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It was exciting to have the opportunity to work side by side with such dedicated citizens and veterans who actually made some of the history?EUR??,,????'?????<??oeincluding D-Day, Battle of the Bulge, Vietnam, Korea, Tuskegee Airmen?EUR??,,????'?????<??oereflected within this outstanding Memorial dedicated to the U.S. service personnel and their families that have given so much for the freedoms enjoyed by citizens every day,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Mike Breedlove of Breedlove Land Planning, the architect behind the Memorial Park.
Through a self-paced and self-guided tour in a park setting, visitors to the Memorial Park have the opportunity to peacefully reflect on the freedom and lifestyle Americans enjoy today. Veterans are recognized from all branches of the armed forces who served during twentieth century conflicts?EUR??,,????'?????<??oeincluding World War I, World War II, The Korean Conflict, The Vietnam War, and the Persian Gulf War. A series of quotes, carvings, statues, enclaves dedicated to specific conflicts, action and interactive sculptures, and plaques remind visitors that war is a horrible event but a nation that stands united can end tyranny and injustice.
The Memorial Park has multiple purposes. The first is to honor those men and women who have served this county, both in times of conflict and in peace. The second is for the Memorial to be an outdoor learning center, for the youth of our country to learn of the history of our nation while walking through the century. The project has been completed in several phases. The most recent phases, which debuted on Veterans Day, 2009, includes The Presentation Enclave Plaza and the Walk of Heroes. The Presentation Enclave is an outdoor gathering space capable of hosting events for over 1,300 people.
From the beginning, Breedlove Land Planning kept the preservation of the natural environment a top priority. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Given the Memorial Park?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s proximity to Rockdale County?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s drinking reservoir, the failure to plan even the smallest detail could adversely affect thousands of people,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Mike Breedlove, architect. The materials used in the project were specifically chosen to reflect the terrain. They reflect Georgian roots in both natural and manmade materials. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?This allows the material to be manufactured and shipped for minimal costs and low environmental impact,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Breedlove.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The architect, Mike Breedlove, selected Pavestone Holland Stone Pewter color pavers to construct the walkways throughout the park,?EUR??,,????'?????<? says Jon Clifford, Pavestone Commercial Sales. Even under the most unfavorable conditions, they are designed to last for at least 30 years.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Earlier phases used City Stone?EUR??,,????'?????????????? V in Pewter and Holland Stone in Pewter both also from Pavestone. All of these contributed to an end result that flawlessly complements the natural ambiance of the site enhancing the overall atmosphere of the Memorial Park. The pavers were installed by Hard Rock Pavers based in Cleveland, Georgia.
Being an economical and durable hardscape product, pavers are perfect for high traffic areas like the Memorial site. Their strength and flexibility allows them to withstand the forces of weather, water and traffic.
The Memorial Park is a fitting tribute to the men and women who have sacrificed so much to ensure the continued liberties we all enjoy as citizens of the United States. Through exceptional architecture and design as well as elements that enhance the natural beauty of the surroundings, it invites us to find peace and reflect on what it really means to be free and those who help secure that freedom everyday.
