Programmable LED tiles bring life to landscape areas

For this project, Kansas City landscape architects Bowman Bowman Novick, Inc., selected an 8-inch square tile with a frosted lens and RGB-controllable LEDs. The tiles are randomly placed across the pathway?EUR??,,????'?????<

NEMA-4 rated enclosures house all necessary controllers and power supplies for the LED tiles. The LED tiles can be programmed to display any given color or sequence. At the Kansas City Art Institute project, for example, eight different program options present passersby with a seemingly new display and experience each time he or she enters the pathway.

Typically, the controllers arrive on site pre-programmed with lighting routines that meet the project?EUR??,,????'?????<

Adjustments to programs are easily made. The lighting programs are stored on a standard SD memory card like the ones used in digital cameras and are easily swapped. They also provide technicians for on-site programming and commissioning of projects if desired.

Individually controlled tiles deliver added dimension

To be in harmony with the historical aura of the surrounding neighborhood, the Kansas City Art Institute primarily uses lighting routines that cycle the LED tiles through different shades of green, blue, and white in various patterns throughout the evening.

To achieve the effects, the LED tiles were wired under ?EUR??,,????'?????<

The pathway site was first excavated to the proper elevations. The plan called for the two required power and control units to be mounted in accessible but inconspicuous locations behind two stone walls that line the pathway. Once those locations were determined, each tile location was also staked and a network of conduit with 18 AWG, 4-conductor cable was laid between the locations of the tiles and the power and control units.

Finally, the walkway pavers and LED tiles were installed and set in place with jointing sand, and the branch cabling was connected to the control and power units via screw-down wire terminals.

In the end, each tile had its own connection to a power and control unit. The contractor delivers 120/240VAC power to each control unit where the current is transformed to low voltage 24VDC by switching power supplies and distributed to the tiles according to the program loaded on the controllers and LED driver boards.

The result is the intriguing blue-green-white patterns that highlight the East Gate entry of the Kansas City Art Institute campus.

IP67-rated tiles withstand weather and foot traffic

Besides installation planning, other concerns for adding underfoot lighting to an outdoor paver installation include the durability of the LED tiles and their ability to withstand steady pedestrian traffic as well as Kansas City?EUR??,,????'?????<

Fortunately, these LED tiles are engineered for such conditions. Each tile is hermetically sealed and moisture ingress rated at IP67. The lenses are made of tempered glass while the tile bodies that house the LEDs are made of rust-resistant stainless steel.

In addition, the 8-inch square tiles have drive-over ratings in excess of 1,750 pounds (smaller sizes have even higher ratings) and are well-suited to withstand pedestrian and light vehicular traffic.

LED tiles help make statement

More than just a simple lighting gimmick, Bowman Bowman Novick is using the pathway with LED pavers as an invitation to the passersby to enter and discover the Kansas City Art Institute campus. BBN co-authored the campus landscape master plan with landscape designer Julie Moir Messervy of Saxtons River, VT.

When the work outlined in the master plan is completed, the pathway will lead to other terraced areas and gardens that aim to attract new guests and complement the landscape features of the nearby Kansas City landmark The Nelson Atkins Museum of Art.
