Missouri Landscape Architects praised Governor John Ashcroft, who recently established registration for Landscape Architects by signing House Committee Substitute for House Bills Nos. 190, 191, and 562. Missouri is the 41st state with such legislation. Initial efforts to gain the licensing requirement for Landscape Architects began in 1964. During the past eight years, the Missouri Association of Landscape Architects, with the support of the American Society of Landscape Architects, worked out the necessary legislation with allied professional organizations and gained the support of the legislature.
Jeffrey Bruce, Chairman of the Missouri Society of Landscape Architects stated, “We support Missouri’s commitment to sound environmental development. On a daily basis, Landscape Architects in the State of Missouri act on behalf of the public with great social and environmental responsibilities. The enactment of this legislation recognizes the contribution Landscape Architects make in the competent design and preservation of Missouri’s natural resources.”
The purpose of the legislation is to protect and promote the health, safety and welfare of the people of Missouri by requiring certain qualifications of those individuals using the title of Landscape Architect. There are approximately five hundred Landscape Architects practicing in Missouri. They are involved with planning, designing, and managing communities, land developments, and natural resources in Missouri.
