Horticulture Educational Services, Inc. is a newly formed consulting firm based in Plantation, FL. Founded by Dr. Derek Burch, Jack Siebenthaler and Charles Bingaman, the group will produce educational materials, plan training workshops and meetings, and develop testing procedures and certification programs. The firm has produced a certification manual for landscape maintenance operators and currently is writing another manual for supervisors involved in maintenance. Active interests of the company include most of the green industry in which training, planning and consultation are needed.

The roast of Rob Sawyer, founder of the Santa Ana CA-based landscape architectural firm, Land Concern, raised more than $6,000 for the Landscape Architectural Foundation’s Class Fund. The roast, one of three major annual fundraising events for the Fund, was hosted by Gary Campbell, publisher of Homes For Sale Magazine and featured the roastee’s father and brother, Maurie and Lee Sawyer.

The Event was co-sponsored by Sullivan Concrete Textures of Costa Mesa and Pacific Sod/Pacific Arbor Nursery of Cammarillo.



Leaving No Stone Unturned Conference

Joel M. Lerner Environmental Design, Chevy Chase, MD, sponsored the third annual “Leaving No Stone Unturned” conference in Bethesda, MD. The theme of this year’s conference was “Landscape Into the 21st Century,” and a capacity audience heard keynote speaker Scott L. Girard, Walt Disney ’s Chief Landscape Architect for nearly 25 years and principal Landscape Architect of Peridian, address the conference theme.

The purpose of this year’s symposium was to highlight the latest and most effective marketing techniques used by some of the most successful landscape professionals in the U.S. and to identify the vast marketing resources that are available. The concept for “Leaving No Stone Unturned” was conceived by Lerner in an effort to pull together and provide a common ground for professionals in all fields of landscaping industries. Landscape professionals attended presentations, hands-on workshops, exhibitions by landscape material suppliers and traded ideas with experts present at the conference. Landscape Professionals Team up for Battered Women








The California Landscape and Irrigation Council has received a Hall of Fame Award from the Irvine, CA City Council for its financial support of the Irvine Farmhouse project, which provides shelter for battered women and homeless families. Klaus W. Ahlers, a member of CLIC’s board of directors, accepted the award on behalf of the Council.

“This project was one way for us to repay our obligation to the community, Ahlers says. “A lot still needs to be done to eliminate the root problems of homelessness and spousal abuse, but this is at least a significant step in the right direction.”

Other organizations participating in the project include Carlacio Landscape, Capistrano Wholesale Nurseries, The Orange County Building Industries Association, Sullivan Concrete Textures, Valley Crest Landscape, HPR Landscape Design….



Wimmer Yamada & Associates Change Name to WYA

Wimmer Yamada & Associates, a San Diego, CA-based Landscape Architecture and land-planning firm, announces a change in the name of the company to WYA, and the promotion of Keith D. Simon, ASLA to partner/principal and vice president. Simon has been project manager and associate at WYA since 1984 and the chairman of the ASLA Open Committee on Urban Design.

The National Xeriscape Council has presented Rain Bird Sprinkler Manufacturing Corp. with a special award for its gift of $10,000 to promote public understanding of xeriscape principles. The National Xeriscape Council is a non-profit organization dedicated to educating the public about the importance of water conservation through sound landscaping practices. Rain Bird’s gift will fund printing for educational brochures entitled, “How To Xeriscape.” The brochures will offer practical information on planning and design, efficient irrigation, soil improvements, low-water-demand plants and maintenance….










The Soil Seal Corporation has been acquired by Trans Western Chemicals, Inc., a major Los Angeles distributor of chemical products. TransWestern plans to continue marketing Soil Seal Concentrate on a national basis for all areas of erosion control and soil reclamation.



Concrete Industry Awards Sullivan Concrete Textures

Francis Sullivan, founder and CEO of Costa Mesa CA-based Sullivan Concrete Textures, accepted his firm’s Engineering Excellence Award during the recent 15th annual Concrete Industry Awards Luncheon held recently at the Long Beach Hyatt Regency Hotel. Sullivan also was presented with an Honor Award for his firm’s ongoing community service that includes the donation of work for the Santa Ana, CA YWCA Hotel for Homeless Women and the Farm House in Irvine, CA for battered and homeless women.



Village Nurseries

Village Nurseries of Brea, CA, has purchased Miya Wholesale Nursery of Stanton, CA, and assumed operation of the 130-acre facility on April 1. The Miya acquisition increases Village Nurseries total production capacity to 270 acres, with two facilities in Brea and four others in Stanton, Orange, Huntington Beach and Del Mar, CA.
