New IFLA President

Mihaly Mocsenyi (Me hail Moey she knee) from Hungary has a been elected President of the International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA). Mocsenyi is the first member from an eastern bloc country to assume the position of president of IFLA. Here is his opening statement as copied from the IFLA News, Feb. 1987.

Dear Colleagues, dear Friends,

May I express my thanks to all who have placed their confidence in me and voted for me I hope to be able to come up to their expectations.

I promise not to misuse your confidence and, as far as my strength and possibilities permit, to do my best to contribute to the development of our profession on an international scale, bearing in mind the interests of IFLA. I shall be able to do this only if I receive the support and assistance of the members of the Executive Committee, the Grand Council, the International Committees and all national associations.

In the last few years, thanks to the untiring and very successful activity of all IFLA members and mainly of Zvi Miller as president, our organization has been developing at a great pace. Professional associations of many countries have joined us.

In the coming years, I think, together with the leaders of IFLA, I will share the most important task of strengthening our results achieved so far and settling matters in dispute. As president, beside these tasks, my activity will mainly aim at winning the professional associations of the Eastern-European socialist countries over to IFLA.

Ths sound financial circumstances of IFLA are important prerequisites of our further activity. Much has been said about this, at the recent sessions and discussions of the Grand Council in Ocho Rios. Here I could not be present although I was waiting for the Jamaican entry visa in Havana, a few hundred kilometers away, for two weeks, in vain. I hope very much that sooner or later we manage to find a solution to our financial situation, perhaps in Paris. So long I ask every association having the cause of IFLA at heart and being in a favourable budgetary position, to assist IFLA in solving its problems with their contributions.

May I express my thanks to all those who have congratulated me on my election and have assured me of their assistance. I ask for your understanding and help so that we can develop our beloved profession by our voluntary and common effort that human environment become more healthy and beautiful and that rural and settlement landscapes serve mankind in an equally more efficient way.

Soviet Landscape Architectural Tour

August 18th-August 27th

The following letter came in from Don Roberts, ASLA, with a request to help get the word out. There are only a few spots left to this exciting opportunity.

Dear Colleagues:

During the 1984 International Federation of Landscape Architects (IFLA) world meeting in Hungary, many of us had the opportunity to meet and establish friendships with our colleagues from the Soviet Union. Through correspondence many have strengthened these relationships. Conveniently, the 1987 IFLA world meeting in Paris offers us the rare opportunity to see them and the Soveit Union PRIOR to the IFLA Grand Council and Congress, so that we may reinforce our appreciation and understanding of our Soviet colleagues and their works. In order that a more personal, face-to-face gathering and discussions may be possible, a select, small delegation, of which you are invited to be a part, is limited to approximately 30 people. These will include educators, authors, practitioners of landscape architecture, their spouses and interested friends.

This nine day tour will take you to Paris in time for the IFLA world meeting (August 28th-September 4). The tour package includes both land and air arrangements and a special reduced, round-trip connecting fare to New York City, our point of departure. (This “add-on” feature is detailed in the enclosed itinerary.) The land portion in the U.S.S.R. includes all First Class hotels, sightseeing, ground transportation, meals and an evening of entertainment in Moscow, in Leningrad and in Kiev.

We will all depart together, but return flights from Paris can vary somewhat as tour participants are not required to attend IFLA meetings. Returns must occur however, by September 18th, 1987 to hold the published price. A specific RETURN DATE MUST BE SET AT THE TIME OF FINAL PAYMENT (June 15th). Since time is critical with but six months to departure, your RESERVATION DEPOSIT of $300 should be in no later than APRIL 15th. All Reservation Deposits and Final Payments should be sent to Julie Neilson who is handling all land and air arrangements for this tour. Her address: Julie Nielson, THE TRAVEL LOG, INC., 528-B East First St., Tustin, CA 92680, (714) 669-0321.
