Florida Landscape Architect Gail Boorman received special recognition recently in a formal, ceremony and OG reception at the White House. The occasion was the 29th Landscape Awards Program sponsored by the American Association of Nurserymen, as First Lady Nancy Reagan presented awards to several individuals for significant environmental contributions.

Florida Land Design and Engineering, Inc. also received a National Landscape Award at the same ceremony for their Tampa Bay Office Park Waterscape. This project, developed by the Landmarks Group, has been recognized by local and regional environmental regulatory agencies as a show case of innovative environmental planning and landscape architecture.

Klaus Ahlers

The recently held third annual LAF/ CLASS Fund Roast was another success. This event added more than $7,000 to the scholarship fund, bringing the amount raised this year to over $30,000. In the five short years of existence, prior to this year, LAF/CLASS Fund has raised over $206,000 for a perpetuating scholarship fund for landscape architectural students in the southern California area.

This year’s evening of insults, ridicule and personal abuse was heeped on Klaus Ahlers, head of landscape contracting for Carlacio Industries. Klaus, one of the original members and driving force in the CLASS Fund, was mercilously ripped by his peers for the good of the scholarship fund at this thirty-five dollar-a-plate affair.

Leading off the evening was Orange County, California supervisor Gaddi Vasquez. According to Vasquez, “now that I know who is responsible for planting the trees in my neighborhood in Mission Viejo, (Klaus) I know where to send the medical bill for my allergies.” Following Vasquez in this years event were Courtland Paul of the Peridian Group, Ernie Carlacio of Carlacio Industries, Dr. Stephan Hassold (Klaus’ doctor), Bill Ahlers (Klaus’ dad), Rob Sawyer of LandConcern Ltd., John Culbertson of Pacific Sod, Pete Dilallo of Cardoza Dilallo Harrington, Landscape Architects, and Francis Sullivan of Sullivan Concrete Textures. The evening was sponsored by Sullivan Concrete Textures and Pacific Sod.

Because of his concern for the future of the industry, Klaus has been active in the California Landscape and Irrigation Council (CLIC) and has served as president in 1979 and 1987. He also served as chairman of the Irrigation Negotiating Committee for six years, as well as contributing his valuable time to the Pipe Trades Joint Adjustment Board Sub-committee, where he represents management in grievance procedures filed against contractors. But Klaus’ greatest personal contribution to the landscape industry over the past eight years has been his long personal involvement with the CLASS Fund.
