Practical Manuals for Landscape Architecture

Van Nostrand Reinhold Publishing is offering a number of sourcebooks for LAs. “Energy Efficient Site Design,” by Gary 0. Robinette, is a practical manual explaining how to adapt basic design applications to any climate to make best use of shading, conduction and evaporation. This 158-page book covers sun and land form interaction as well as wind directions in various geographical areas. “Site Perspectives,” by L. Azeo Torre, focuses on the tilt-up technique – a free-form combination of aerial, axonometric, isometric and one-point perspective drawings – as a quick and accurate solution to the deadlines and economic pressures imposed by large-scale architectural and planning projects. The 192 pages are filled with specific data and sequential drawing from individual projects illustrating the evolution of particular designs.



LAF Irrigation Handbook Needs Contributions

Toro is responsible for chapters covering Typical Installation Details and Technical Specifications for the LAF Installation Handbook, which is presently in the writing process. In order to represent actual practices as completely as possible, Toro is requesting samples of detail drawings and specifications commonly used. The samples will be used to refer to when writing the chapters and some will be used for samples in the book.

Urban Forestry Board Established

The Salt Lake City Council (Salt Lake City, Utah) has approved and officially appointed members of the Urban Forestry Board members for the seven council districts, the Central Business District and the Sugarhouse Business District. In addition, Urban Forester Steven Schwab and Parks Superintendent John Gust will serve as ex-officio members of the Board.

The eleven member Board is responsible for making recommendations to the council regarding ordinances which protect and manage the Salt Lake City Urban Forest; recommending policies and practices regarding maintenance of the urban forest; reviewing landscaping on city property; and advocating care and protection of Salt Lake City’s urban forest.

Urban Forestry Board members who are also members of The American Society of Landscape Architects are Jennifer Harrington (District #3) and Peter Lassig (Central Business District).

LandPlan Consultants Announce Move

LandPlan Consultants. a master planning, site planning and landscape architecture firm, has relocated its offices to the 201 Executive Center, 201 West Fifth Street, Suite 310, Tulsa, Oklahoma. Interior Design Show’86 Exhibits Garden/landscape

In September 25-28, an estimated 20,000 buyers and 300 exhibiting companies will be at the Orange County Fair & Exposition Grounds in Costa Mesa California for Ron Baron’s Interior Design Show. Among the four exhibit buildings will be the Garden/Landscape, atrium type filled with lush, accessorized botanical gardens and streams by 34 Orange County landscape firms under the direction of May Martin, owner of May Martin Designs for outdoor furniture. This building will house an opening night fundraiser for the Orange County Performing Arts Center as well as two other fundraisers and a press party.

Baron is a longstanding interior designer and owner of the South Coast Design Center who, for the fourth year in a row, has been responsible for this event. The three other buildings are a design house, with each room decorated by a prominent designer, a trade building where the latest innovations by manufacturers, designers, craftsmen, can be seen along with a demonstration of a computerized source system; and the interior design building which will showcase designer/exhibitor talents with view rooms. Seminars will also be in the trade building.

SCC/ASLA & LAF/CLASS Fund Call For Design Awards Entries

The Southern California Chapter, American Society of Landscape Architects (SCC/ASLA) and the Landscape Architecture Foundation/ California Landscape Architectural Student Scholarship Fund (LAF/ CLASS Fund) have announced the 1986 Design Awards honoring “The Many Facets of Excellence.” A call for entries from licensed landscape architects, both association members and non’ as well as their licensed contractors has been made with an entry deadline of 5 p.m., Friday, August 29,1986. University, college and extension students currently enrolled in landscape architecture are also eligible.
