Christmas At The White House

Nightscaping, the originator of the 12-volt lighting system concept, was invited to install low-voltage decorative and safety lighting at the White House for last year’s National Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony December 10, 1987.

The installation required 120 fixtures to illuminate 60 state and U.S. Territory Christmas trees and their identifying signs along the Walkway of Peace, in a perimeter area enclosing the National Christmas Tree and viewing areas.

One of the primary reasons Nightscaping was invited for this installation was its longevity. For more than 28 years the company has been meeting changing design requirements and developing quality low-voltage lighting systems.

Another was a requirement that the ground and safety lighting not detract from celebrants’ enjoyment of the decorated trees and the lighting ceremonies.

This was a unique challenge because it went against the grain of Nightscaping’s design philosophy that the lighting effect be seen, not the source. What was needed was a new fixture, one that could satisfy both company design and White House requirements.

The solution was development of a new design that allows fixture installation in plain sight while still remaining hidden along the walkway. Each 54-inch, white octagonal fixture had its beamspread opening facing away from passersby and was connected by a thin link of chain, completing the illusion that each fixture was merely a fence post marker. At night, either a tree or identifying sign was illuminated by an MR-16 low-voltage bulb hidden inside the hollow fixture body.

An additional six larger fixtures were installed as uplighters around the base of the National Christmas tree.

Third Annual LAF Luncheon

Don Hilderbrandt, incoming LAF president,, presents Francis Sullivan, the chairman of the Southern California CLASS Fund, with a plaque of appreciation for their $35,000 donation.

The Third Annual LAF Luncheon was a smashing success, and all in attendance agreed that the guest presentation kept everyone on the edge of their seats. John Amatt, a world-renowned mountain guide, dazzled the audience with his slides of Mount Everest and the story behind a successful ascent of such a treacherous landscape. Amatt drew many parallels between mountain climbing and the challenges we face in daily life, including man’s tendency to fear change. “Not only should we be prepared for change,” exclaimed Amatt, “but we should look for ways to change. Constancy can suppress the mind and the soul.”

In addition to the guest presentation, many were impressed by the generosity of so many LAF supporters. The announcement of a $50,000 pledge to LAF by the Rain Bird Company’s representative, Rick Davis, was applauded as an outstanding commitment to the landscape architecture profession. Part of this generous gift will be used to support the overall goals of LAF; part will establish a scholarship fund. The first award will be available in 1988.

Edith Henderson brought the crowd to their feet when announcing that her $10,000 gift was one of the most gratifying acts she has ever made. Another highlight of the luncheon was the awarding of a plaque of appreciation to Francis Sullivan, the chairman of the Southern California CLASS Fund, for this group’s generous $35,000 donation to the Foundation.

Several supply companies participated in the Foundation’s Annual Meeting Support Program, a project devised to involve all segments of the landscape industry in the activities of the foundation. Those 1987 program participants known to the readers of LASN include:
