This year the Landscape Architecture Foundation (LAF) will bestow four prizes to professionals in the field of landscape architecture. These awards?EUR??,,????'??+available to firms, practitioners and researchers?EUR??,,????'??+were established to recognize outstanding design and research projects in landscape architecture. The deadline for the following $350-$750 awards is September 9, 1988:

The Toro Industry Advancement Awards – innovative irrigation techniques and tools; AILA/Taro Yamagami Fellowship – continuing educational purposes; Lester Walls Endowment Fund – research on barrier-free design; The Grace and Robert Fraser Heritage Award – creative horticultural research or design.

A hundred and fifty-two golfers turned out on June 20, 1988, for the fourth annual CLIC/CLASS Fund Golf Tournament at the Alta Vista Country Club in Placentia, California, making it one of the most successful money-raising events in CLASS Fund history.

According to Klaus W. Ahlers, who has run the tournament since it began, this year’s event is expected to net about $15,000.

“The tournament is really developing into a major green industry attraction, and we are delighted with the enthusiastic response it’s been getting,” Ahlers said.

“Our biggest concern this year was trying to accommodate all golfers who wanted to enter. We were still getting registrations on the day of the tournament and we tried hard not to turn anybody down,” he added.

There were 32 sponsors, with Rain Bird again picking up the tab for the awards banquet. More than $5,000 in prizes also were donated.

Arborists and building trades people who come in contact with trees will have an opportunity to learn how to reduce tree damage liability. The American Society of Consulting Arborlsts (ASCA), the New York State Arborists, ISA Chapter and Council of Tree and Landscape Appraisers (CTLA) will conduct a special seminar and field practicum October 2, 3 and 4 at the Ramada Inn in Syracuse, New York.

Chairman Peter Poltrack said that curriculum for the three-day construction injury and tree evaluation clinic will be for arborists, general contractors, home builders, developers, municipal officials, utility personnel and Landscape Architects. Topics will include: Types of Injury; Preventing Construction Injury; How Injuries Occur; Methods and Procedures for Plant Appraisals and Treatment for Plants Under Stress.



Design Competitions

While announcements for the Ohio Design Project Awards competition have not been mailed yet, they are forthcoming In order to bet better prepared, you may want to begin thinking about the project you want to submit and begin taking photographs/slides or writing the narrative. The deadline for submittals will be the end of July. All awards will be presented at the awards banquet held during the regional meeting in Akron on September 15-17, 1 988.

The San Diego Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects announces the “call for entries” for its second bi-annual design awards competition. The competition is open to all chapter members.

The design awards credit the industry which has had such a profound effect of the quality of our daily life. “The competition allows us to draw attention to the work done by Landscape Architects,” said Keith D. Simon, 1988 Awards Program Chair. “We look forward to receiving 75 to 100 exciting and innovative entries for our jury to review.”

Outstanding projects submitted by members of the San Diego Chapter are honored in the following categories:

Honor and Merit Awards: “Built Projects Only:” residential, single and multi-family; commercial/retail/corporate; institutional/ governmental/civic; planning/ communication/research; parks and recreation.

Citations of Recognition, “Not-Yet-Built Projects” which are scheduled for construction within two years and “Never-to-be-Built Projects” which includes any commissioned or organized competition project not scheduled for construction. An awards celebration gala will be held in the Reuben H. Fleet Space Theater and Science Center at 6 p.m. on December 9, 1988. Winners of the competition will be announced at that time.

The University of California Cooperative Extension will offer a seminar entitled “Palm Tree Management,” October 19, 1988, at the Oxnard Community Center, Oxnard, California. The tree management seminar offers research-based information on practical aspects of arboriculture. Seminar topics are relevant to professional arborists, landscape contractors, nursery, landscape maintenance, government personnel, consultants, educators and Landscape Architects.

This one-day seminar will cover all aspects of palm tree management in landscapes. Topics include selecting palm species for landscape uses, bidding palm tree installations and determining tree value, purchasing and transporting palms, transplanting, care after planting, proper pruning, diseases and problems concerning palms.

Registration is required on or before October 1,1988, and is limited to the first 500 registrations received. Registration is final. There will be no refunds. A written confirmation of registration will be sent to all registrants. A fee of $25.00 per registrant includes seminar attendance, refreshments and certificate of completion.

Space Station # 5: Planting Plans

Representatives of leading associations in the green industry met at the offices of the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) in Falls Church, Virginia, onJune20,1988, to discuss the Foliage for Clean Air Council (FCAC). The American Association of Nurserymen, The Florida Foliage Association and the Society of American Florists met with representatives of the ALCA staff and leadership to discuss the mission of FCAC.

The Foliage for Clean Air Council will communicate the findings of the joint NASA/ALCA research study as results are published. The council is to work as a communications network providing clear and accurate information on the ongoing study for all affiliated green industry organizations. The organization will meet periodically to discuss interim reports and to coordinate efforts in distribution of this information.

The NASA study supported by ALCA examines the ability of 10 common commercial plants to extract toxic indoor pollutants from indoor atmospheres. It is anticipated that the final report on this study will be released in 1990.

The representatives of FCAC will welcome the participation of any other organizations in the green industry interested in supporting this effort.

The National Xeriscape Council, Inc. (NXCI) has collected information from various xeriscape programs across the country and combined it in notebook form. This notebook provides examples of brochures, descriptions of programs and general ideas for xeriscape.

The SCC/ASLA has announced its design awards competition for 1988. Entries have been mailed and are due by the end of August. Catagories will include written works, design, landscape planning, analysis, research and student works. The Awards banquet will be held on the evening of September 23 at the Biltmore in Los Angeles.
