David Bohardt has been named Executive Vice President of the American Society Of Landscape Architects (ASLA) and will assume the position the week of November 3.
“David Bohardt is a skilled association manager and communicator with a solid record of achievement. We are extremely pleased that he will be joining the Society as our Executive Vice President,” said John L. Wacker, ASLA President.
“His challenge—and ours – is to build on our past accomplishments and to chart new directions for the Society, the profession we represent and the publics we serve,” Wacker said.
Bohardt’s appointment came after an exhaustive screening and selection process involving hundreds of candidates for the position.
Bohardt, 40, has a wide range of executive experience in association management at the American Pharmaceutical Association (APhA), the American Society for Training and Development (ASTD) and the National Funeral Directors Association (NFDA). He is currently Executive Director of NFDA, a 14,000-member professional/trade organization headquartered in Milwaukee.
At APhA and ASTD, both headquartered in Washington, Bohardt’sduties included management of the organizations’ publishing, public relations and marketing operations.
While at NFDA, Bohardt has been a leading force in improving relations with national and state organizations; developing an effective strategic plan; significantly expanding member products and services; and tripling the Association’s cash reserves.
Bohardt earned a bachelor of arts degree (history and theology) from The Catholic University of America and a master of arts degree in journalism from the University of Maryland. He also completed extensive graduate work in American history and British constitutional history.
He is a member of the American Society of Association Executives and has prior experience as a high school teacher and newspaper journalist.
Bohardt and his wife, Judy, will be moving to Washington with their two children, Justin (age 5) and Nicholas (age 2).
ASLA represents the profession of landscape architecture in the United States. Established in 1899, ASLA today has 8,500 members in 47 chapters. Its purpose is to advance knowledge, education and skill in the art and science of landscape architecture as an instrument of service in the public welfare.
Michael Weeks, RLA, landscape architect in Post, Buckley, Schuh & Jerigan’s Miami office has been appointed chair of the Miami section of the Florida ASLA. His two-year term will encompass organizing monthly meetings for the section and coordinating state and local policies concerning landscape architecture. Weeks is a one-year employee of PBS&J, formerly with Henderson, Rosenburg, Scully and also with the Dade County Parks and Recreation Department where he served as landscape architect for the Metro Zoo. Weeks is a graduate of Kansas State University.
Hans Biland, Louis D. Schenone, and Ronald S. Teshima have been appointed judges for the 1986 California Landscape Contractors Association Trophy Awards Competition.
“We are very fortunate to have three judges of such high caliber,” said Ernst Lehmann, chairman of the CLCA awards program.
Biland of Hans Biland Landscaping, Portola Valley, has more than three decades of green industry experience in Europe, Argentina, and the San Francisco Bay Area. He has been an active member of CLCA since 1956, serving as president of the association’s San Francisco BayArea Chapter in 1971. Biland earned his college degree in ornamental horticulture from the Oeschberg School of Horticulture near Bern, Switzerland, in 1948.
Schenone, recently retired, has been involved in the horticultural industry since 1935 as a wholesale grower, retail nursery sales manager, and executive vice president for Pacific Nurseries in Colma. Schenone also served as president of the Peninsula Chapter of the California Association of Nurserymen in 1959-60.
Teshima, ASLA, is a principal of Wimmer Yamada & Associates, San Diego, a multi-disciplinary design firm that provides services in landscape architecture, land planning, and urban planning. Teshima has a B.A. degree in landscape architecture from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, and he also studied landscape design at Japan’s Kyoto University.
CLCA will present its Trophy at the association’s Annual Meeting November 10 at the Waiohai Hotel, Kauai, Hawaii. “Perfection in Paradise” is the theme of this year’s program.
More than 225 projects were submitted for awards consideration, shattering all records for number of entries in the program’s 31-year history.
Susan Cronin has been appointed regional sales manager for the Richdel Turf Irrigation Division. Cronin’s territory covers Southern California from Los Angeles to the Mexican border, as well as Las Vegas, Nevada. Her responsibilities include serving as a link between Richdel and irrigation consultants, landscape architects, and landscape contractors. Cronin brings with her over eight years’ experience in the irrigation industry.
Sharon McGuire has been appointed executive director of the California Landscape Contractors Association. She succeeds Michael E. Leeson, who recently resigned his position after 14 years of service. McGuire has been with the CLCA for more than six years and has been in charge of public relations, meeting planning, budget planning, the Landscape Industry Show, and the CLCA Trophy Awards Program.
John Tew, President of John Tew And Associates, of Goldsboro, North Carolina, has been appointed sales representative by Champion Irrigation Products. Tew’s territory includes North Carolina, South Carolina, and Virginia. Tew and Associates is located at 602 Arrowhead Dr., Goldsboro, NC 27530, (919) 735-4195.
Jay Inglis has been named Technical Services Manager for Hunter Irrigation, San Marcos, California. He will be responsible for product field service and will lead irrigation system design courses at San Diego area colleges. Inglis has worked in the irrigation industry for more than 17 years as a system designer and as a salesman for turf irrigation equipment. He has also been employed as an irrigation systems consultant.
Charles Vander Kooi, one of the nation’s top estimating consultants, will speak at the CLCA annual convention to be held on Hawaii’s Kauai Island, November 9-11. Kooi is slated for an all-day appearance covering such topics as: determining which project to bid; developing accurate costs; and the folly of percentages.
