LAF is a nonprofit organization dedicated to the educational advancement of the profession and the protection of the environment. We look forward to covering the accomplishments of this newsworthy organization.

Six new board members have been appointed to the Board of Directors of the Landscape Architectural Foundation. LAF Directors Contribute their time and talent in helping guide and manage the activities of the organization. Here are the new members….






Anthony M. Guzzardo


Anthony M. Guzzardo, ASLA, has been president of Anthony M. Guzzardo and Associates, specialists in landplanning and landscape architecture, since he organized the company in 1963. AMG’s award-winning projects encompass commercial, housing, and public sites, and include: Quail Lakes, Stockton, CA; Vintage Club, an Indian Wells resort; and the TransAmerica Redwood Park, located in the company’s home city of San Francisco. Guzzardo previously served with the Chicago Public Housing Administration and Sasaki, Walker & Associates. He received his bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture from the University of Illinois, and his MLA from the Harvard Graduate School of Design.






Donald F. Hilderbrandt


Donald F. Hilderbrandt, II, FASLA, is senior principal and cofounder of Land Design/Research, Inc. He has helped create several planned communities, including Nuns’ Island in Montreal; The Woodlands, near Houston, Texas; and the home of LDR, Columbia, Maryland. Prior to establishing Land Design/Research, Hilderbrandt was associated with Johnson, Johnson and Roy, Inc., and was chief landscape architect for The Rouse Company. He obtained his undergraduate and graduate degrees in landscape architecture, from Pennsylvania State University and the University of Michigan, respectively.






Jane Silverstein Ries

Jane Silverstein Ries, FASLA, has been a landscape architect in private practice in Denver since 1932. She has designed more than 1500 landscapes in the Colorado region, encompassing hospital, church, commercial, park and public project sites. Her dedication to good land use awareness has benefited many volunteer organizations?EUR??,,????'??+the Denver Park People, Denver Botanic Gardens, Nature Conservancy, and Denver Urban Forest. Ms. Silverstein Ries is a graduate of the Lowthorpe School of Landscape Architecture for Women.






Robert H. Rucker


Robert H. Rucker, FASLA, retired landscape architect, campus planner, and horticultural educator, continues to serve the profession through active participation in numerous volunteer capacities. Rucker has been the campus planner for Baylor University and Oklahoma Baptist University, and director of grounds maintenance for Texas A&M University. His previous academic positions include professorships at the University of Oklahoma, Texas Technological College, and Texas A&M. Mr. Rucker has been honored by the National Council of State Garden Clubs and the American Horticultural Society for his professional achievements and dedication.






Robert M. Sawyer


Robert M. Sawyer, ASLA, is founder and president of the Santa Ana based firm, Land Concern, Ltd., which focuses on market-oriented services for residential and commercial developers. The firm specializes in community development and marketing, recreational planning, and commercial development. Prior to forming this company, Sawyer was associated with Courtland Paul/Arthur Beggs and Associates (Peridian Group). Sawyer is cofounder and past-president of the CLASS Fund, Committee for Landscape Architecture Student Scholarships, and a landscape architecture graduate of California State Polytechnic University at Pomona?EUR??,,????'???

Elliot I. Rhodeside, ASLA, is cofounder and principal of the newly established Washington, D.C. firm, Rhodeside & Harwell, Inc. Throughout his career, he has worked on such sites as The Willard Hotel and the National Zoological Park in Washington, D.C., and Dock Square and other open spaces surrounding Faneuil Hall in Boston. Prior positions include vice president of the Washington office of EDAW, and chief landscape architect for the Boston Redevebpment Authority. Rhodeside earned his bachelor’s degree from the Philadelphia College of Art and his MLA from the University of Pennsylvania.






Lane L. Marshall


Lane L. Marshall, FASLA and past president of the ASLA, has been selected to judge the Landscape Architecture/Land Planning discipline of the FAME Awards, sponsored by the Builders Association of the Southern Florida (BASF). Lane is head of the Department of Landscape Architecture at Texas A&M University. He maintains a consulting role in Marshall-Behnke & Associates, Inc., formed in 1981 through a merger of Lane L. Marshall & Associates, Inc., of Sarasota and William Behnke Associates, Inc. of Cleveland, Ohio. A University of Florida graduate and former national president of the American Society of Landscape Architects, he has also held several offices in the Florida Chapter of the ASLA, and served as national trustee for five years. Lane also was the first recipient of the University of Florida’s Department of Landscape Architecture “Distinguished Alumnus” Award….






Donald Brinkerhoff


Donald Brinkerhoff will speak at the 19th Annual Multi-Housing World. Scheduled for May 3rd~th in Atlanta, GA, the conference/exposition is designed for builders, developers, architects, apartment owners/managers and other professionals actively involved in this field.

Mr. Brinkerhoff will address Waterscaping: A Planning Concept That Sells on Monday, May 4th. He is the Chief Executive Officer/Director of Design for Lifescapes, Inc., an international planning and landscape architectural firm with offices located in Newport Beach, California and Atlanta, Georgia. Lifescapes has designed over 300 water-oriented apartment, condominium and resort communities nationwide.

“Creating a pleasant environment with water can be as diverse as the person designing it, marketing it or selling it,” Don explains. “Water is a natural wonder. All things are attracted to it, all things are dependent on it. As man gained control over water for his practical needs, so he began to see ways in which water could take on a friendlier posture. I believe in the necessity of dynamic environments in both our personal and working lives.”

Included in Mr. Brinkerhoff’s presentation are three focal points from which Lifescapes’ techniques have evolved: Team Approach To Design, Actual Construction Costs and Types of Consultants Required for WaterOriented Design.

Representative water-oriented projects include The Lakes Country Club, Palm Desert, California; Brookside, Atlanta, Georgia; Val Vista Lakes, Phoenix, Arizona; and the new Golden Nugget Hotel/Resort, Las Vegas, Nevada.






Ron Albert


Ron Albert, a specialist in the specimen and superspecimen tree business for over 40 years, has joined Hillcrest Trees of Corona, CA. Under the terms of the agreement, Hillcrest Trees now has two main divisions: Hillcrest Specimen Trees and Hillcrest Nursery. Mr. Albert is general manager of the Specimen Tree division; Russ Kelly continues as general manager of Hillcrest Trees, itself, and the Hillcrest Nursery division. This new partnership means more efficient, diversified, complete service for all their clients.






Jaime Rodriguez


Jaime Rodriguez has been appointed salesman in charge of Boething Treeland Farm’s new Wholesale Will-Call Window. Jaime has been with the company since his graduation from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo where he majored in Ornamental Horticulture with a concentration in Business Management. Prior to his position in the Wholesale Department, Rodriguez was a top salesman in the company’s Retail Division. The Wholesale WillCall Window was created to accommodate the Woodland Hills location’s many drop-in customers.






Kristi Anderson


Kristi Anderson has been hired as a sales account representative for a Boething Treeland Farm’s Southern California Division, according to John E. Boething, President of that company. Anderson grew up in South a Dakota where she attended South Dakota State University and earned a: her degree in Horticulture. Kristi’s management experience gives her a rare understanding of her customers?EUR??,,????'??? needs...
