The California State Board of Landscape Architects has announced the election of its 1986 officers. Serving as president will be Ray Verches, public member; vice president is Juanita Raven, public, member; and the representative to the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards is Rae Price, professional member.

Robert D. Hablitzel has been appointed by Governor George Deukmejian to serve as the Northern California Professional Member of the state board. Hablitzel is president of the HLA Group in Sacramento and is a California licensed landscape architect.

Co-sponsored by Rain Bird, Sprinkler Mfg. Corp., the American Society of Landscape Architects, and the American Society of Irrigation Consultants, the 1986 College Irrigation Design Competition awarded a total of $6000 in prize money to students nationwide in four categories. Winning students are: Michael D. Ellis of Washington State University (Individual Entry-West); Robert Coffey of Kansas State University (Individual Entry-East); Jeanie Burger and Dean Best of California State Polytechnic University, Pomona (Team Entry-West); and Charles H. Arrington, Lyndon O. Hart and Ken Uhle of Louisiana State University (Team Entry-East) An awards ceremony was held at the Rain Bird headquarters in Glendora, California.

Rain Bird has also announced the appointment of Brendan Lynch as Eastern specifications manager for its Turf Division As area specifications manager, Lynch serves as liaison between Rain Bird management and landscape architects, irrigation consultants and city and county officials Also newly appointed for the company’s Turf Division has been Walt Jackson as the marketing communications manager and Scott Smart as Rocky Mountain district manager. Jackson is responsible for the overall direction and administration of Rain Bird’s Authorized Service Center Program, which includes more than 100 independent distributors nationwide. Smart’s responsibilities as district manager include providing sales support to Rain Bird distributors and contractors as wel1 as serving as a city, county, landscape architect and irrigation consultant liaison.






Laurie Fieg


Laurie Fieg has been named sales representative for the southwestern states at Valley Crest Tree Company, a subsidiary of Environmental Industries. Fieg has been in the industry for 10 years and has a degree in ornamental horticulture from the University of Wisconsin, at Madison. She has been with Valley Crest Tree Co. since 1985 as inside sales representative.






Mlchael E. Leeson


Michael E. Leeson, executive director of the California Landscape Contractors Association for almost 14 years, has announced his resignation, effective July 30. Leeson said he plans to return to Southern California and enter private business.






Greg Meyer


Greg Meyer of Valley Crest Tree Company, Sylmar, has been appointed chairman of the 1987 Landscape Industry Show Committee by the CLCA. An active member for the past 13 years, Meyer was named associate member of the year in 1976 and previously served as show committee chairman in 1985.






James Baynham


James Baynham, president and chief operating officer of Huntington/ Pacific Ceramics, Inc., has assumed the additional title of president of Huntington Tile. Baynham’s new assignment results from a restructuring of responsibilities within the Ceramics Division of Pacific Holding Company. He has been associated with Huntington/Pacific since 1962.






Owen E. Dell






Allen Flinck


Owen E. Dell and Allen Flinck are owners of Horticultural Data Systems. They are announcing a new plant selection data base to be available this summer called “Plantline.” Dell is a licensed landscape contractor and horticultural consultant who has received numerous awards for his work over the past 15 years. Flinck is a professional botanist with a 16-year career as a college instructor and administrator specializing in plant systematics and ecology.
