Newark, New Jersey-based El Taller Colaborativo, PC, has added William J. Strauss as director of education planning and design. Strauss has more than 30 years of experience in the planning, design, and management of educational, institutional, corporate, and R & D projects.

Richard W. Apel

The Collaborative West, located in San Clemente, Calif., announced the addition of Richard W. Apel, ASLA, as an associate with the firm. Apel served as director of landscape architecture for the Legoland California theme park in Carlsbad, Calif.

Karla Arnold recently won first place in the Specialty Gardens category and Best in Show for the 2nd Annual Landscape Design Residential Awards presented by the Association of Professional Landscape Designers.

Wilfrid L. Gates, Jr., chairman of Leighton & Associates has been inducted into the Blackstone Society for his contributions to Rhode Island’s Blackstone River Valley.

O’Boyle, Cowell, Blalock & Associates, Inc., has announced the receipt of a Design Honor award for the Western Michigan University’s Business Technology and Research Park from the Michigan Chapter of the American Society of Landscape Architects.

Dickson F. DeMarche, principal of the Wilton, Connecticut firm the LaurelRock Company/Dickson DeMarche Landscape Architects, was appointed president of the Council of Landscape Architectural Registration Boards.

Kay Van Sickel

Otak Inc., an award-winning design and engineering firm in Portland, Oregon, announced the appointment of Kay Van Sickel to lead its rapidly growing transportation business group. Van Sickel was formerly the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) manager for District 1, which encompasses the Portland Metro region and large areas east and west of the city.

Novato, Calif.–based United Green Mark is pleased to announce that Bob Johnson, former regional sales manager of the northwest, upper midwest and mountain states for Toro and Irritrol, has accepted a position as director of sales of Green Mark’s mountain region, reporting directly to company president Ron Sentman. He began his new duties October 13, 2003. Johnson will maintain an office in Commerce City, Colo., and will also travel throughout the UGM mountain (Colorado and New Mexico) region.

Ruppert Nurseries, located in Laytonsville, Maryland, recently hired Rich Schubach as director of business development, and Doug Halsey as Maryland region manager, landscape management.

Automata has appointed Boyd Wilson as California’s sales representative. Wilson comes to Automata with over 25 years of experience in the areas of water, power, agriculture, and other industries.

Ruppert Nurseries has announced the promotion of Jorge Torres as assistant nursery manager. Torres has been with Ruppert for three years and has over 15 years of experience in the nursery industry. He will oversee all nursery field operations including digging, pruning, liner planting and field maintenance.

Brad Dozler has joined Lewis Seed Company of Shedd, Oregon. Dozler has 21 years of sales and marketing experience in grasses and legumes and will be responsible for the continued development and sales of proprietary varieties for Lewis Seed.

Horizon has named industry veteran Mark Mullikin as its new sales manager for the California region. Mullikin will manage the inside and outside sales team, focusing on irrigation, landscape, turf and equipment sales to landscape professionals. Mullikin has over 25 years industry experience, having held several prominent positions in both distribution and manufacturing.
