Dear Editor:
I would like to offer up the single most important issue facing landscape architecture. Brace yourself, for you will undoubtedly question my assertion but your na????vet????????(R)???????(C) cannot diminish the truth of it.
As long as the word ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????landscape?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? is carelessly and lazily slandered as a cool way of saying tree or shrub or plant, landscape architects will be thoughtlessly pigeon-holed as tree or shrub or plant architects. And until that changes, until landscape is understood as the exclusive descriptor of the land on a macro scale, where whole sites comprise the patchwork of the landscape quilt, we will continue to experience client losses to engineers, architects, and other ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????new?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? disciplines. When will we finally deduce the origin of narrowing public perceptions of the profession? When will we stifle the source of vacuous, demeaning, and disconnected definitions of landscape architecture? Words have meaning. Respecting ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????landscape?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? as an inviolate noun is paramount. Refraining from lazily using ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????landscape,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????landscaping,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????landscaped,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? etc., when referring to plants is equally important. These usage changes must begin in the hearts and minds and more importantly, on the lips of every landscape architect, and individually, landscape architects must remain consistently and persistently vigilant about the language of our profession. Otherwise, we will continue to experience a narrowing role of being the landscapers called upon to landscape the landscaping.
William M. Davenport, ASLA Virginia Beach, VA
Regarding my article, ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????The Challenging Playground,?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? [Sept. issue] I got a huge number of calls and emails from friends, colleagues, and clients from around the country. This further confirms what we have learned by advertising with LASN, your magazine reaches more professionals in our profession than any other.
Jay Beckwith Beckwith Associates, Inc. Forestville, California
Thank you for the very special way that you honored the ASLA Class of Fellows, 2003. The special format and the use of colored photographs of each Fellow made your presentation outstanding.
Thank you for honoring these professionals as you have.
Armand Brunet Inverness, Florida
Editor’s note: You can read about the individual Fellows at www.landscapearchitect.com. Here, you can also congratulate them.
Jack Zunino, FASLA, has 23 years in the landscape architectural profession. The ?EUR??,,????'?????<????????3?EUR??,,????'?????<???????? was dropped from the published text.
Doris Preisendorf Sullivan, FASLA, has been involved in landscape architecture since 1975. She was the first landscape architect hired permanently into the general engineering section of the engineering design branch of the St. Paul, MN, District U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. She was instrumental in making landscape architecture part of civil site design at the St. Paul District of the Corps of Engineers, where, previously, LAs worked on master plans, recreation plans, visual analysis, preliminary conceptual design, and planting plans that responded to site designs of civil engineers.
The image of Lolly Tai, FASLA, was superimposed over another photo. It should have been reproduced as below.
