Re: ?EUR??,,????'??A Walk in Time: The Avalon Waterfront Restoration?EUR??,,????'?? (Aug. issue)

July LASN Cover

I had the pleasure of presenting the ASLA Medallion to the mayor of Avalon and landscape architect Bob Borthwick. I can tell you that the community was very engaged in the project until the climax and very proud of the result. The project was extremely difficult logistically due to the off-shore location and extremely sensitive historically and politically because of the intimate nature of the community of Avalon. The Borthwick team did a masterful job. I am passing your comments along to Bob as I am sure he will appreciate them.

Here is an article about a town in California that reconstructed their downtown public spaces the right way. This is how I want to practice landscape architecture.

Re: ?EUR??,,????'??Yosemite Falls: Where Nature Meets the Crowd?EUR??,,????'?? (July. issue)

In the ?EUR??,,????'??Yosemite Falls?EUR??,,????'?? article the author writes about the ?EUR??,,????'??high cost?EUR??,,????'?? to restore the majesty of the approach to lower Yosemite Fall and that the ?EUR??,,????'??park service?EUR??,,????'???s lackluster budget?EUR??,,????'?? may prohibit future park improvements. Readers are likely to wonder who paid for the $14 million falls project. In fact, the project was made possible by over 14,500 individuals, corporations, foundations and some government funding. This support and the partnerships it entailed was directed by the Yosemite Fund, the park?EUR??,,????'???s primary fundraising organization.

Private contributions help the National Park Service to preserve, protect and enhance Yosemite National Park. Since 1989, the fund has provided more than $35 million for 200 projects in Yosemite National Park. The ?EUR??,,????'??Spirit of Yosemite?EUR??,,????'?? visitor orientation film, Glacier Point restoration, miles of trail repair and Happy Isles Nature Center exhibits occurred because of the generosity of fund donors. Currently, donors are sponsoring a $1.3 million renovation of Olmsted Point, where visitors take in the spectacle of the Sierra Nevada?EUR??,,????'???s granite landscape. The contributions of diverse, concerned constituents who give to the Yosemite Fund made the falls project possible, and it is their generosity that will allow similar architectural beauty and natural wonders to endure.

Re: ?EUR??,,????'??Adelante South Omaha! Forward South Omaha?EUR??,,????'?? (Aug. issue)

Greetings, I enjoyed the streetscape ideas in the article ?EUR??,,????'??Forward South Omaha?EUR??,,????'?? in your most recent issue focused on streetscapes. I would like to forward this article to a group in Detroit working on revitalizing a neighborhood with a primarily Hispanic population.

Thank you for your assistance. Your magazine is an excellent professional resource!

Re: News item ?EUR??,,????'??Coup de Cow?EUR??,,????'?? (on LOL and in Sept. issue)

This is great!

Too many landscape architects take themselves entirely too seriously. The results are often tasteful?EUR??,,????'??+and boring! There?EUR??,,????'???s magic and humor in art, and not enough of either magic or humor in our daily lives.

Bravo to the artist/landscape architect, and the cows! (Utterly like a chorus line?EUR??,,????'???..)

Kudos

I am a retired landscape architect. I was registered as a licensed landscape architect in California and received my license in 1954. That was when the state first started to license landscape architects. I enjoy very much reading Landscape Architect and Specifier News.
