Linda Strader, RLA and Certified Arborist from Green Valley, Ariz. writes:

I agree wholeheartedly with Michael McDonald who wrote to say how much he preferred your magazine as opposed to the Landscape Architecture magazine. I have never found the LA magazine remotely pertinent to what I do, full of multi-million dollar projects that are the exception rather than the rule, whereas LASN is a wealth of useable information for LAs like me who work on much smaller, more down-to-earth types of projects. I have recommended LASN to many LAs who don?EUR??,,????'?????<

Eric Sauer, RLA, ASLA, CLIA, vice president of Envision-Works, Inc., Landscape Architects and Planners, Dayton, Ohio writes:

I was excited to see an article on irrigation as it relates to the landscape architect, however was greatly disappointed with the article that Mr. Pearson presented. In general, landscape architects lack significant technical knowledge related to the design and implementation of irrigation systems. It is critical as landscape architects that we educate and train ourselves to either design these systems ourselves or work competently with a qualified irrigation designer. We need to possess the knowledge required to effectively review the plans that are developed and included with our construction document sets. There is so much more to developing a quality irrigation system than giving a designer limits of construction and the planting plan. With today?EUR??,,????'?????<

As for the design build approach, this is absolutely about the easiest way to mess up a project and get us sued. There are very few ?EUR??,,????'?????<

The Irrigation Association offers many very high quality courses to educate ourselves as landscape architects about irrigation. Specifically, I would recommend the Certified Landscape Irrigation Auditor course. This two to three-day class gives a professional the knowledge to review a design, develop programs for controllers for proper water application and conducting on site audits to ensure that a systems meets specifications.

The Bradford pear tree was a favored tree of developers 20 years ago in Norwalk, Iowa. During the one week of blossoms in the spring it is easy to see why. However, the rest of the year, especially after any significant wind event, this tree tends to be high maintenance. Also, as a result of the inherit weakness, the community has an abundance of misshapen trees.

Has anyone considered that the image of stately palms in the landscape is attractive to those who do not have any palms in their own surroundings? They appeal to people in colder climates and convey the feeling that Phoenix is warm. Better think about that while providing shade trees. I used to enjoy driving Central Avenue (in Phoenix) and I remember those palms.

The billboard industry is being disingenuous by insisting that their business activities are protected by the First Amendment. Free speech is all about what one puts on the face of the structure. It has nothing to do with the act of erecting that structure.

Richard Gustafson of Ocala, Fla. writes:

What an excellent publication LASN has become! Thanks for keeping me up on the profession and on your subscription list.

Through I am 87 and only working for clients, many ask my advice and I do talk to garden clubs and a member of the American Rhode Island Society of Massachusetts Chapter Board. I find your magazine very interesting and helpful.
