Dear LASN Readership:
URGENT!! Your help is needed to defeat SB 87. Please contact your legislators immediately and followup with a letter asking them to oppose SB 87.
This bill has been assigned to the Senate Business and Professions Committee and can be heard with only three days?EUR??,,????'??? notice. The hearing date has not yet been set, but most likely will be within three weeks.
The attached document from our lobbyist, Dick Ratcliff, is an excellent outline of the various issues involved in the current political attitude towards licensing.
This document discusses the ?EUR??,,????'??new?EUR??,,????'?? licensing issue that our profession faces. SB 87 simply repeals the sections of the Business & Professions Code that authorize the existence and authority of the State Board of Landscape Architects including all their regulations including the authority upon which our licensees are based. It would repeal the entire legal structure necessary for us to practice our profession in relationship to government at all levels, and particularly in our relationships with other professions.
Each of the ASLA Chapters and CCLA, as well as the State Board encourage you to get in touch with the Chapters and to work with any and all to help defeat this new threat to our existence. The enclosed material can serve as a guide, but we strongly encourage you to work with other licensees. An organized effort will be more effective than a disorganized one.
You, and other licensees and all that support us, are the vital link in our ability to communicate with the legislative process. Enclosed, also, is a guide to locating your Legislator. To the extent that there is an overlap, send letters to both listed.
Please help us! If you and other licensees and supporters merely assume that others are making the effort, we will be a voice in the wilderness and failure will result. Any contacts with people that rely on the competence of Landscape Architects should express the need for a continued licensing structure. Tell both the Assembly and Senate to vote NO on SB 87!
Copies of your letters should be sent to the following:
a. Governor George Deukmajian, StateCapitol, First Floor, Sacramento, CA 95814.
b. Joe Heath, Board of Landscape Architects, 1021 O Street, Sacramento, CA 95814
c. The Honorable Joseph Montoya, California State Senate, State Capitol, Sacramento, CA 95814
It is important that the letters be sent so as to convince the Legislators of the importance of a NO vote on SB 87. Copies are important to convince the Governor and the Agency not to take a position in support of the bill.

Dear LASN:
Since the C.L.C.A. ?EUR??,,????'??86?EUR??,,????'?? Show, l have read every issue of your publication and learned a great deal about what?EUR??,,????'???s on the market and about designs. l have noticed that the subject of playground equipment has been introduced this year. However, the subject of specifying for playground safety has not yet been discussed. With the increase in liability suits, and the fact that architects are now being named in these suits, it is a subject that they need to keep up on. As a supplier to the industry, and also a parent, l would like to see this subject discussed at length.

Thank you for your efforts in helping Greenlee Landscape Lighting create public awareness of Article 225-26 in the 1987 National Electrical Code. As a direct result, the National Fire Protection Association has written a tentative interim amendment to Section 225-26. The text is as follows:
?EUR??,,????'??Exception # 2: Outdoor lighting fixtures and associated equipment installed on trees where supplied by an underground wiring system with the branch-circuit conductors extended up the trees by an approved wiring method.?EUR??,,????'??
Your readers will be glad to learn that this change has been made. Once again, thank you for your help and cooperation.

We all thoroughly enjoy your great publication, particularly the beautiful covers. I, as office manager, like to read, display and share our copy with all who visit our office.
Is there any possible way not to put the ugly address sticker smack dab on the front of the lovely front cover? How about the back cover or a better label that peels off without leaving a trace?
