This months Landscape of the Month was submitted by David Kemp of Kemp and Associates in La Jolla, California for their work at the Carlson Residence. The requirements of this project were to build a front yard where the owner could entertain 200 to 300 people.
Working under very restrictive but subjective development guidelines Kemp and Associates had to keep in mind the existing architecture while working in a backyard which was initially choked with trees and shrubs and consisted of a 30 percent slope limiting their useable space. A series of retaining walls were constructed and designed to incorporate a classical Mediterranean feeling to the project.
Warm coral-toned stucco, tropical plantings of hibiscus gardenia and palms, and the shimmering sound of cascading water over the indigo tile all invite one to celebrate the climate and bring the party outside. Drainage is provided through the brick bandings into a trough below while the irrigation heads are designed right into the banding itself. In addition all the fountain equipment is in a separate room actually underneath the reservoir of pools.
Congratulations to Kemp and Associates for their fine renovation. A $25 donation has been made in your name to the CLASS Fund.
