This month’s Landscape of the Month was submitted by Steve Rose and John Peters of Purkiss-Rose Associates, Fullerton, California. Purkiss-Rose Associates design for the Chevron Oil Field Research Facility in La Habra, California, (Sylvia Lyons Project Landscape Architect) is an example of what early cooperation between architect and landscape architect can achieve. Chevron wanted to renovate its old facility, add new buildings, and create a relaxing and interesting atmosphere for its employees and international visitors. In addition, Chevron requested a better security arrangement.

Working with the architect at an early stage. Purkiss-Rose helped turn a long existing parking area into a green space by moving the parking lots to the perimeters. The architects then connected the old and new buildings with covered walks around this green space making the landscape the focus of the Chevron facility. Purkiss-Rose developed this central space utilizing large existing trees with paths, a large fountain, a 450 seat amphitheater, and plant material. Also featured at the facility are an employee sports center, an employee art sculpture and an employee supported plant labeling system.

The Landscape Architecl and Specifier News and Nightscaping would like to congratulate Purkiss-Rose and Associates for an outstanding job. A $25 donation has been made in your name to the CLASS Fund.
