Florida-Friendly Butterfly Garden at Tampa Electric?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Manatee Viewing Center
When Sharon Eichler, a senior landscape architect with the engineering, landscape architecture and planning firm Wade Trim, was asked by Tampa Electric to assist with the 25th anniversary and refurbishing efforts at the company?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Manatee Viewing Center in Apollo Beach, Fla., she jumped at the opportunity. Excited to lend her expertise to an eco-friendly project, she contributed conceptual design and construction assistance to turn an empty corner of the facility into a native landscaped butterfly garden.
We immediately envisioned using sustainable principles to create an interesting combination of art and technology within a natural setting that was true to the region,?EUR??,,????'?????<? said Eichler. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Our hope is that the design of the garden provides educational opportunities that will encourage and foster environmental stewardship.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
Known for attracting the Florida manatee (Trichechus manatus latirostris) by the hundreds to the warmth of Big Bend Power Station?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s clean, warm discharge canal when the water temperature of Tampa Bay dips below 68 degrees, the Manatee Viewing Center welcomes about 350,000 people annually. The center?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s 2010-2011 season kicked off on November 1st and ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oe thanks to the efforts of Wade Trim and with the support of other community volunteers from the Outback Steakhouse corporate headquarters and the local Boy Scouts ?EUR??,,????'?????<??oevisitors can now enjoy a variety of butterfly species in a pleasing, organic environment.
Every Effort Was Made As a certified Florida-Friendly yard, the garden meets the requirements of the Florida Yards & Neighborhoods statewide program. It features more than 26 species of local, drought-tolerant plants. Florida limestone rock edging frames the garden pathways, which create the shape of a 30-foot-wide butterfly, visible from the deck above. The mulch is made of shredded Melaleuca trees, a non-native invasive, exotic pest plant that is harvested to improve the health of natural areas throughout the state. Every effort was made to salvage and reuse materials, such as native plants, boulders and signage. The garden also features a collection system designed to harvest rainwater from the roof of the education center and reduce stormwater runoff. Local artists decorated the rain barrels with images of manatees and indigenous birds.
A Natural Environment Wade Trim is a proponent of environmental and social responsibility, we truly enjoy participating in projects that protect natural resources and preserve a region?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s unique beauty. This was one of those projects.
