LASN December 2015 Hardscapes

By Philip Julius, Go Pavers

At this new home in Santa Clarita, Calif., Go Pavers, a family-owned paving company, installed a backyard patio, fire pit and seating wall, a pool deck and coping, and an outdoor kitchen area. Belgard pavers were used throughout the project: Lafitt rustic slab pavers for the patio and pool area, and Weston wall blocks for the fire pit and seating wall. The homeowners supplied their own outdoor furnishings, including lounge chairs, a sofa, and a dining table with an umbrella.

Go Pavers is a small, family-owned company that provides hardscape installation services in Southern California, including this recently completed project at a home in Santa Clarita. For this project, they used pavers from Belgard, an Interlocking Concrete Pavement Institute, or ICPI, certified pavers manufacturer.

The project was done from scratch, meaning the home had just been built and the front and backyard areas were completely dirt. The homeowners hired a pool contractor to construct a swimming pool, so Go Pavers did what they call a "demo pull off." This involved demolishing and excavating dirt from the property to make it so the pool contractor could install the pool. Go Pavers was then able to complete the hardscaping. The hardscape installation, not including the demo pull off, took about three weeks.

Using rustic slab pavers in "Toscana" and "Bella" colors, project manager Kobi D. created an inviting walkway to the home's entrance. Veneer stone was used to create the pillars. After the hardscape installation, the homeowners installed a combination of grass and drought-tolerant landscaping, including zebra grass, an olive tree and rocks, to complement the pavers.

The installation spanned a wide range of projects, including a fire pit, barbecue, pool deck, pool coping, paved patio and paved front walkway. Lafitt rustic slab pavers bordered with Bergerac pavers were used on the pool deck, backyard patio and front walkway. The walls, including a perimeter wall and two seating walls around the patio area, create a natural sense of enclosure with Weston wall stones. The design team chose "Toscana" and "Bella" colors for the pavers, as they complemented the color scheme of the rest of the property. This custom designed combination of paver styles and colors was created to best fit the overall aesthetic of the home.

The total area of the pavers spans approximately 3,400 square feet, which includes the backyard patio, pool deck and front walkway. The installed amenities create an outdoor living space complete with a fire pit and barbecue. For these additional installations, the Go Pavers team used the same paver types used for the backyard, pool patio and front walkway installations. This creates aesthetic continuity, better integrating permanent pavers amenities into the outdoor living space. The 110 linear feet of pool coping was done with Mega Bergerac pavers. For the fire pit and barbecue they used Weston wall blocks. The front yard pilasters were done with veneer stone and caps.

Mega Bergerac pavers were used for the 110 feet of pool coping, and for the borders of the slab pavers on the pool deck and backyard patio. For the pool installation, the homeowners hired a pool contractor and asked Go Pavers to perform what they call a "demo pull off." This means that the team demolished and excavated the dirt from the property, leaving the contractor free to install the pool. After the pool was completed, hardscapes were installed.

In their projects, Go Pavers aims to create hardscaping that can be complemented with plants and additional landscaping. In this case, after the completion of the paver installation, the homeowners installed grass and drought tolerant plants in their yards. They also used rocks to accentuate the combination of hardscaping and landscaping. In the newly hardscaped backyard, which includes a barbecue grill and stainless steel sink, the homeowners furnished their outdoor living area with a brand new set of furniture, including lounge chairs, a couch, a dinner table with sun umbrella, and pool chairs.

Go Pavers' ICPI certified project manager Kobi D. oversaw this paver installation project from start to finish, including pre-installation planning, the placement of the last stones and everything in between. As this home was newly built, the entire plot of land around it was dirt, with no preexisting hardscaping or landscaping. In cases such as these, it can be a challenge for the owners to pick out the pavers that best fit their desired style and budget. Kobi D. helped the homeowners pick out pavers that would provide the aesthetic they were looking to achieve with their new home. This project was a chance to execute a beautiful, varied pavers installation from scratch. Go Pavers completed every aspect of the hardscapes, from design planning to execution to post-installment. The homeowners have expressed satisfaction with their new home hardscapes.

Wall blocks were used to construct the outdoor kitchen area, which includes a stainless steel barbecue and sink. The veneer stones complement the natural look of the patio pavers. The entire project, excluding the demo pull off, took three weeks to complete, and included the installation of 3,400 square feet of pavers.
