Gold travertine was used to surround the pool and on the flooring in the courtyard to tie the two areas together. The vanishing edge pool features a roughly four-foot drop, accentuating the views of the Lewis River Valley. The plants used on this project include Yellow Mums, Pink Mandevilla and Banana trees.

The homeowners of a residence located in Wildwood, Mo. used a different view of beauty when thinking about their outdoor space. With the help of landscape architect Richard Poynter, the homeowners?EUR??,,????'?????<

All of the construction for this outdoor space was new construction that was designed to unite the space between the main residence (left) and the detached office (right). The space is relatively small at 100 feet x 36 feet, allowing for the cozy feel the homeowners wanted.

Poynter, owner of Ballwin, Mo.-based Poynter Landscape Architecture and Construction, noted that the outdoor space measured 75 feet x 28 feet before the project began and that the homeowners wanted a swimming pool but were concerned that a pool might take up the entire yard space.

Poynter was successful in designing an outdoor space that includes a pool that does not overwhelm the property. The pool is centered adjacent to a courtyard that sits between the homeowners?EUR??,,????'?????<

A mix of annual flowers and herbs including: Lantana, Geraniums, Vinca, Mint, Basel, Lavender and Vinca Major are used to add color to the space. The pergola is aligned with the vanishing edge of the pool and the columns are staked with manzanilla vines. The fireplace is the focal point of the outdoor space during cooler times of the year. Despite its old appearance, the fireplace was also a new feature added to the outdoor space. The aged look of the fireplace was achieved by reusing bricks from a fireplace that was located in an old section of St. Louis.

The pool is surrounded by gold travertine, a surface that is also used in the courtyard. Comfort and calmness were key themes in the design and Poynter utilized similar elements throughout the design to bring a sense of uniformity to the project.

Everything in the outdoor space was new construction and Poynter noted that the outdoor room, given the Missouri climate, can be used from March through December. During the warm months, the chairs are positioned to view the pool. When the temperatures cool, the chairs are positioned around the fireplace.
