It was twenty years ago today; I was going to a show to play, As an advertising agency, For a nursery that was called SeaTree, From there I introduced to you, The one and only mag to view ew, ew, ew, Landscape Architect and Specifier News . . .
Ok, so you really have to push it to get it to sound like Sergeant Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band, but it was twenty years ago at the CLCA show in Long Beach, one week after the Long Beach/Toyota Grand Prix, that about a dozen vendors approached me and asked me to put together a magazine to reach that relatively obscure group called landscape architects . . .
John Duxbury was the first, God rest his soul . . . He and his partner (who?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s face I can still see but whose name I will probably remember the day after the presses roll) had just invented a new irrigation controller that you could hook up to a radio controller. The Rain Master controller allowed a field operator to turn on or off a valve through the controller, from the site of the valve . . . State-of-the-Art stuff . . .
That was shortly after I was ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????relieved?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? of my position at Western Landscaping News because my publisher had sold his magazine group to a huge publishing group called Harcourt Brace Jovanovich . . . that is, all save one . . . That?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s right . . . Western Landscaping News. While all the other publications and trade shows of Hester Communications went to the megalithic HBJ, my little pub, WLN, went to my arch nemesis Denne Goldstein, of Landscape and Irrigation fame.
Denne and me, I think it?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s safe to say, just did not like each other. I was the young kid, he was the old establishment. More than once we had comrades step between us . . . Funny . . . but as I see it now, I doubt you?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????d be reading this if it hadn?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????t been for our fierce competition . . .
Anyways, thanks to a guy named Bob Stover, who joined WLN in it?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s last months to put together a trade show for that newly defined landscape architectural market segment, we had found a niche readership that was only being represented by an old school, east coast ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Society.?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? The National Interior Landscape Expo or, as we called it, the NILE show was a pretty good startup trade show that featured/relied upon the attendance of another new group called the California Landscape Architectural Student Scholarship (CLASS) Fund.
Made up mostly of landscape contractors and old A.I.L.A. members (the American Institute of Landscape Architects was somewhere along the way assimilated into the ASLA), the CLASS Fund was a group of really great industry leaders who had the idea that they could raise enough money to establish a perpetual scholarship fund to improve and enhance the landscape architectural profession.
So anyways . . . when good ole Larry Hester sold out to ole what?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s his name, that niche target of Landscape Architects was left, once again, to that eastern seaboard society of mostly unlicensed designers . . . That was just, or should I say, that was way back in 1985.
It was the night after the CLCA Show, where I originally went to meet with my ad agency client SeaTree Nursery, that I got a late night call from the owner of another ad agency, named Alan Evans whom I had befriended back with WLN. He told me that several of his clients were ready to jump on board if I took the step and started up a magazine . . .
So, it literally was twenty years ago, almost to the day that the magazine you now hold was conceived, eventually to be published for the first time in July of ?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????85.
Just thought you might be interested in a little LA(SN) history . . .
God Bless . . .
