Block Walls Become Focal Point Of Freeway Landscape
When a landscape needs to look great but use no water at all, landscape architects get creative. And that?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s exactly what the landscape architects from C.F. Shuler, Inc. did when the Nevada Department of Transportation (NDOT) hired them to design the landscaping of 80 acres along five lineal miles of freeway in Las Vegas.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?As landscape architects, we try to design things that have a sense of place,?EUR??,,????'?????<? explained Carol Shuler, L.A and principal of C.F. Shuler, Inc. Shuler?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Arizona design firm specializes in southwestern landscapes and focused this project?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s design on Southern Paiute Native American basketry designs.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?We exploded the spiral basketry pattern and used it for the wall graphics along the freeway, and also incorporated it into the three-dimensional earth graphics which include freestanding wall spirals in the intersection landscaping,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Shuler explained. NDOT is very conscious of water usage, and asked Shuler to design the project without any plants that would require irrigation.
Design With those parameters in mind, Shuler knew she wanted to use earth graphics (creating patterns on the ground plane with hardscape elements and swathes of stone in varied colors and textures) as part of the design. She also wanted the landscape to be more three-dimensional. She envisioned massive chunks of gorgeous red sandstone from a nearby canyon to provide a third dimension. After reviewing the cost of sandstone, it was apparent that a more cost-effective alternative was needed. Recalling an article she had seen, the search began for a large block precast retaining wall system.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?The freestanding blocks allowed us to build the two-sided walls we were going for, and the textures and colors had a similar look to the red sandstone jumbo blocks we originally considered,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Shuler said. The freestanding blocks weigh about 1,500 lbs. each and measure 46 inches wide by 18 inches tall by 24 inches deep. The deeply textured blocks stack up like giant Lego blocks and are commonly built as gravity structures. Made of architectural-grade wet-cast concrete, the massive blocks can be stained to match any landscape. The walls Shuler designed ranged from three feet to six feet tall. With each intersection measuring about 3.5 acres, the landscape still needed more height to have the visual impact Shuler wanted. So, she designed image panels made of layered wire fabrics. These panels followed the curves of the walls to create images such as a giant tortoise and a prickly pear cactus.
Cobblestone texture blocks were stained a deep red color to match natural red sandstone indigenous to the area. Using massive, wet-cast concrete blocks ?EUR??,,????'?????<???(R) each weighing 1,500 pounds (bottom photo) - allowed the landscape architect to achieve the look she wanted while keeping the project on budget.
Construction ?EUR??,,????'?????<?It took a lot of teamwork to figure out how to make it work with these tight radii. We did a lot of custom pours and made drain blocks so that water could go underneath the walls,?EUR??,,????'?????<? explained Frank Nunes of Jensen Precast.
Installation of this project was very challenging due to the tight radii and the design of each wall being different. The landscape architect?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s design required that no daylight be visible through the walls, which meant that the installer needed to saw cut many of the blocks. Jensen Precast was able to custom cast blocks to reduce the amount of cutting required on each block. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?We were doing something weird with the manufacturer?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s product, and it took some experimentation on the part of the installers,?EUR??,,????'?????<? Shuler said. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?They did a great job of making the walls look just right, so that you can drive all the way around every one of those walls and not see daylight.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The Outcome In total, the project required 11,500 sq. ft. of cobblestone texture freestanding walls, stained to match the native red sandstone. This creative application showcased the versatility of the blocks and the project was honored as ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Freestanding Wall of the Year?EUR??,,????'?????<? as part of the 2010 Redi-Rock International Rocky Awards.
