Digital Workflow: ArcGIS, AutoCAD and Google Earth
With the numerous web applications and software programs available to the public for free download, it?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s much easier in today?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s world for designers to share their work throughout the design process with clients and the public. The ability to share digital data via free software, such as Google Earth, gives non-CAD/GIS users the tools to access and visualize design concepts and proposals in a more interactive way. It also provides more options for designers to present design concepts away from the office.
This article explores workflow methods for AutoCAD and ArcGIS users to visualize and share their designs using free software and smartphone/tablet applications such a Google Earth. While the examples illustrate basic 2-D data, similar workflows can be adapted for 3-D data.
GIS + Google Earth When you need to view and share GIS data outside the typical GIS environment, Google Earth?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s easy to use interface and free download options make it an ideal choice for sharing data. Esri?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s ArcGIS software (purchase required) is one of the more common GIS software packages used by designers. The Conversion Tools in ArcGIS 10 are a fast and effective way to convert GIS data for use in Google Earth. The ?EUR??,,????'?????<?To KML?EUR??,,????'?????<? toolset lets ArcGIS users convert individual data layers and entire map documents into .kml files (the file format used to view geographic data in Google Earth). The data features and symbology in the ArcMap document are retained during the conversion, so when the .kml file is opened in Google Earth, there?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s little to no additional work. Once in Google Earth, users view existing layers and create new layers as placemarks, paths and polygons. The layers created in Google Earth can easily be converted from .kml format to a feature class for use in ArcGIS by using the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?From KML?EUR??,,????'?????<? toolsets (see images above).
AutoCAD + Google Earth Autodesk Labs offers a Google Earth Extension for AutoCAD-based applications, free for download: https://labs.autodesk.com/utilities/google_earth_extension_beta.
To download the extension, which is said to work with AutoCAD 2007 and newer versions, you will need to register and login on the Autodesk labs website. You download the extension and extract the files. Your AutoCAD version determines the remainder of the installation.
I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?m using AutoCAD 2011, so once I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve run the 64-bit setup file within the 2011 folder I open AutoCAD, navigate to the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Manage Tab,?EUR??,,????'?????<? select ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Load Application?EUR??,,????'?????<? and load the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?AeccDWGToGE.arx?EUR??,,????'?????<? file from the extension install location. I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?m now ready to import a Google Earth image into AutoCAD. Google Earth and AutoCAD must be open. Once you have the position within view in Google Earth, type ?EUR??,,????'?????<?ImportGEImage?EUR??,,????'?????<? into the command line of AutoCAD and select an insertion point for the image. The Google Earth image will appear in black and white and will most likely need to be moved and/or rotated it to align with your AutoCAD linework. Once the image is aligned, type ?EUR??,,????'?????<?PublishKML?EUR??,,????'?????<? into the command line. A wizard guides you through the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?PublishKML.?EUR??,,????'?????<? Be sure to select the ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Collect from Image?EUR??,,????'?????<? option for the User-Defined Transform to georeference the AutoCAD data in relation to the Google Earth aerial. Once the wizard is complete, the data is published as KML and can be viewed in Google Earth (see image above).
Google Earth App for Smartphones/Tablets The free Google Earth Application is available for the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad and Android phones and tablets. As an iPhone 3GS user for two plus years who has tried numerous methods for mobile access to KML files (including syncing with Google Maps), the most successful method I?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?ve found is using an online storage account with a smartphone app, such as Dropbox, to access KML files for mobile Google Earth viewing. With my Dropbox account and iPhone app I now have a centralized location to store multiple KML files for mobile access via Google Earth. Since Dropbox cannot view KML files directly, it provides an in-app option to view files in Google Earth once they have been downloaded through the app.
To Sum Up The ArcGIS 10 Conversion Tools make for a virtually seamless workflow between GIS and Google Earth. AutoCAD?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s Google Earth Extension requires a bit more work, but the potential is there. The ability of ArcGIS and AutoCAD to integrate with Google Earth and other programs (e.g., SketchUp), in addition to mobile applications, offers more possibilities for feedback and collaboration throughout the design work.
