In 2006, IPEMA celebrated 10 years and is soon to celebrate 30 in 2026. One of the most influential members of the association is Tom Norquist, a longtime champion of the power of play with more than 42 years of experience in the commercial play and recreation industry. A founding board member and twice past president of International Play Equipment Manufacturers Association (IPEMA), Tom is also the creator of the Voice of Play initiative, which he launched with IPEMA to raise public awareness about the lifelong value of play. His efforts have helped position play as essential to healthy child development, community connection, and inclusive design.

The future of landscape architects and play equipment manufacturers is deeply interconnected, with exciting potential to shape the way communities engage with outdoor spaces. As the importance of play, wellness, and inclusive design continues to grow, so does the opportunity for our professions to work together to create environments that are not only functional, but fun, enriching, and accessible for all.
IPEMA is dedicated to ensuring the safety and quality of play environments through its rigorous certification programs for playground equipment and surfacing.

By aligning creativity, technical expertise, and a shared commitment to community well-being, landscape architects and play equipment manufacturers are well-positioned to enhance the beauty, quality and functionality of outdoor environments - helping to make them more welcoming, inclusive, and fun.
