In 1986, two landscape designers - Donna Swansen and Peggy Connors - met and discovered that had similar professional concerns and issues. Over two years, they met to plan how an association for professional landscape designers might address these issues. In 1988, the name Association of Professional Landscape Designers (APLD) was chosen. They decided to embrace the idea that great design is global in scope and that the association would welcome an international landscape design membership. Incorporated in February 1989, the newly elected APLD Board of Directors held its first meeting, with Donna Swansen as President.

Donna and Peggy exemplified the spirit of APLD: combining professional excellence with leadership, mentorship, and dedication to elevating landscape design. Their contributions helped cement APLD's foundation as a respected voice supporting certification, education, and community among landscape designers.

The future of landscape designers and landscape architects is full of promise, innovation, and opportunity. As communities increasingly seek sustainable, beautiful, and functional outdoor spaces, the demand for skilled professionals in both fields continues to grow. By embracing collaboration, innovation, and a shared commitment to shaping better outdoor environments, landscape designers and landscape architects can look forward to a future where their work has lasting, transformative impact on communities and ecosystems alike.

As seen in LASN magazine, July 2025.
