Janelia Farm Research Campus, Ashburn, Va.
The Janelia Farm Research Campus is the first research campus for the Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI). Following the completion of a laboratory building designed by Rafael Viñoly Architects, LSG created a phased program of landscape improvements, working closely with HHMI and the contractor, optimizing the budget and capitalizing on opportunities that arose during installation, such as the. The design was inspired by the clean, minimalist concepts evident in traditional Japanese courtyards, evoking a tranquil, reflective setting with soothing water sounds, extensive use of native boulders, a sense of graduating scale and flowing motion. 2008 Honor Award, ASLA Potomac and Maryland Chapters.
Aquiary Outdoor Interpretive Area, Ashburn, Va.
Following the completion of a landscape design for Loudoun Water’s new administrative office building, LSG created initial concepts and an interpretive master plan for the 20-acre Aquiary outdoor interpretive area. Essentially a “water museum,” the Aquiary helps residents understand water treatment and delivery, source water protection and water conservation and reclamation. The master plan describes 12 proposed interpretive sites linked with a boardwalk and trails. LSG completed construction plans and construction services for the first phase with an entry water feature, enhanced rain garden plantings and wetland areas. Reclaimed water, soil, boulders and recycled materials were central to the project. 2008 Merit Award, ASLA Potomac and Maryland Chapters.
