The Pentagon Memorial, Arlington, Va.
Keith Kasemen and Julie Beckman’s winning concept for the Pentagon Memorial was realized through intense collaboration, research and attention to detail of a multidisciplinary team. LAI and Balfour Beatty Construction were appointed design/build contractors. The memorial honors the 184 victims of Flight 77 on 9/11. The memorial demarcates the victims’ ages. These lines border the benches, becoming stainless steel edging on the graveled ground, wrapping up and around stonewalls and carrying across the security wall. As architect-of-record for the project, LAI provided design leadership, staffing and coordinated a team of concept designers, engineers, water feature specialists and lighting consultants. Sustainable design included stormwater infiltration, energy efficiency and environmentally-sensitive chemical treatments. The 16.5 million dollar memorial park opened September 11, 2008. 2004 Design/Build Competition Winner
Korean Ambassador’s Residence, Washington, D.C.
For the three-acre property in northwest D.C. featuring the work of Korean Architect Soon Gun Kim, LAI developed a landscape master plan, water falls and plant materials specific to the Korean landscape: chestnuts, persimmons and Korean boxwoods. Historic sculptural stone from Korea proliferates and the courtyard fountain features monolithic prehistoric stone. Since the start of the design in 1996, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers discovered contaminated soil and WWI munitions on the grounds. Site excavation removed many mature trees and destroyed much of the garden. In 2000, LAI prepared an extensive garden restoration plan, including an arbor, pavilion and rock outcroppings. 2002 Merit Award Potamac/Maryland ASLA Chapters
