Las Vegas Bets on Medical Facility Expansion Plans

The installation is one of several potential projects to build or expand medical facilities in the Las Vegas area, which could be a boon to the local landscape industry in the near future.

A new hospital tower, nursing facility and senior-living residential complex are planned in Henderson, Nev., and a hospital expansion is already underway in northwest Las Vegas, according to Vegas Inc. magazine. More projects are planned, and even though few are guaranteed as yet, changing area demographics indicate that medical facilities are likely to continue to grow in the region.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, about 12.5 percent of Nevadans were at least 65 years old in 2011. That number is projected to climb to 15.4 percent in 2020 and almost 19 percent in 2030, according to the federal Administration on Aging. Because of the dry, mild weather and extensive amenities, Las Vegas is growing as a destination for senior citizens.

At least three new projects are planned for Henderson, including a $156-million, five-story tower and four-level parking garage on the Siena campus of the St. Rose Dominican Hospitals. The garage is expected to be finished in April, while construction of the tower is slated to begin in April and finish in June 2015. The Siena facility sis located near several retirement communities, and Henderson is home to a larger percentage of seniors than the rest of Clark County.

The project mentioned above, also in Henderson, is the 150-acre Union Village complex planned for U.S. 95 at Galleria Drive. The $1.5 billion project includes four hospitals, 1,000 residential units for senior living and extensive medical office space. The area would also feature retail shops, hotels and a movie theater; construction, however, is not expected to start until at least 2013.
