LAs Tackle Issues of Beach Protection, Renovation, Access

The theme of the Israeli Association of Landscape Architects’ annual conference that began on Oct. 27, 2006 at the Israel Air Force Center in Herzliya was “Between Beach and Landscape, Dialogue on the Waterline.” The conference brought landscape architects, architects, urban planners, engineers, geographers and agronomists, decision makers and green organizations together to deliberate how best to develop the coast without damaging beach areas. Issues include guaranteeing democratic use and access to beaches, preservation of sea cliffs and whether to plant lawns or seashore plants along the coast.

A reporter covering the event noted: ?EUR??,,????'???EUR??,,????'??? the political and social implications are missing from the agenda. The list of participants includes only professionals from the field. Representatives of populations that live along the coast are conspicuously absent.?EUR??,,????'??

Landscape architect Aliza Broida has plans to rehabilitate the so-called “Jaffa Corridor” beach area and to build a park. This coastal area was a garbage dumping ground for the Tel Aviv municipality for 20 years. The city also demolished hundreds of buildings and forced out thousands of Arab neighborhood residents, reports journalist Esther Zandberg.
