Back in October 2006, Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villarigosa announced his plan to plant a million trees in the city, although no due date has yet been announced. The trees are sought to make LA more beautiful, shaded, clean, and healthy by filtering air pollution and carbon dioxide. (Note: Trees respire and release CO2 and water, but they take in a much higher rate of CO2 via photosynthesis.) The planting will include native trees that require less water, with no mention of planting new palm trees.
The program utilized research from the Center of Urban Forestry Research, which took both satellite imagery and aerial photography to both measure LA?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s tree density and to map a plan where to plant the trees.
Not surprisingly, the images illustrate a correlation between tree canopy cover and income level in Los Angeles, showing low-income areas to have ?EUR??,,????'?????<?significantly fewer trees than surrounding areas.?EUR??,,????'?????<? The project aims to target these low-income areas which could benefit the most from the new trees.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?Low-income areas tend to have higher incidents of asthma and respiratory disease,?EUR??,,????'?????<? assertss Greg McPherson, director of the Center for Urban Forest Research. ?EUR??,,????'?????<?Sometimes they?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?re located adjacent to freeways, areas where there are high concentrations of pollutants. So, adding a layer of green in those areas will help filter out the small particulates and some of the ozone and gaseous pollutants.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
The research showed LA?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR?s tree canopy cover is 18 percent, far below the national average of 27 percent. By mapping out the new trees?EUR??,,????'?????<???EUR? location, maintenance of those trees will also be more organized and funding for maintenance over the lifetime of the trees is ?EUR??,,????'?????<?being developed.?EUR??,,????'?????<?
