The Department of Interior's latest approval paves the way for a massive offshore wind project, boosting the clean energy landscape.

The US Department of Interior (DOI) recently announced the approval of the Coastal Virginia Offshore Wind (CVOW) commercial project which signifies the fifth commercial-scale offshore wind energy project during the Biden administration.

The CVOW project, located approximately 23.5 nautical miles offshore Virginia Beach, is projected to have the capacity to provide approximately 2,600 megawatts of clean and reliable offshore wind energy. Once completed, it is estimated to power over 900,000 homes.

This project follows intensive discussions and consultations with Tribes, federal agencies, state and local leaders, ocean users, and the industry to ensure a well-informed approach to offshore wind energy development.

The Elizabeth Klein, Director of the U.S. Department of the Interior's Bureau of Ocean Energy Management (BOEM), who played a central role in this planning process, emphasized the importance of ongoing collaboration to develop clean energy resources responsibly and ensure a sustainable future. These projects are pivotal in lowering energy costs, creating jobs, and addressing the climate crisis. By gaining approval for the CVOW project, BOEM remains on track to review at least 16 offshore wind energy project plans by 2025, collectively representing over 27 gigawatts of clean energy.

Additionally, the project's approval includes measures to minimize environmental impact, such as setting up fishery mitigation funds and establishing vessel speed restrictions. These measures are crucial for maintaining the balance between clean energy development and environmental conservation.
