Lappas + Havener to Redesign Two Downtown Raleigh Pedestrian Malls





Among the project work of Lappas + Havener is the North Carolina Museum of Art.


The landscape architecture firm Lappas + Havener in Durham, N.C. has been hired by the city of Raleigh, N.C., to redesign two pedestrian malls, the Exchange and Market plazas. The goal is to create more engaging spaces, boost pedestrian usage and encourage restaurants and retailers to extend their enterprises into the outdoors.

The work of the landscape architects will including redesigning the plazas to accommodate larger crowds, mitigate storm water runoff, provide clear views into and across the plazas and integrate public art.

"We're excited about creating a distinctive and sustainable urban environment that will attract visitors and encourage them to take full advantage of what Raleigh has to offer," said Walt Havener, president of Lappas + Havener.

The firm, founded in 1993 by Bob Lappas and Walt Havener in Durham, does site and urban design, community and recreational planning, and comprehensive master planning for corporate, university and municipal clients throughout the southeast. Prominent projects include the North Carolina Museum of Art's Sculpture Gardens and Art Park.
