Things are a little less bright on Akron’s South Main Street, thanks to culprits who have stolen landscaping lights worth nearly $50,000 from along the downtown thoroughfare. ‘’The lights were stolen from planters in front of Cascade Plaza,’’ said Lt. Rick Edwards, Akron police spokesman. Police reported that 45 lights were taken. These lights were used to illuminate the plaza area. Since the initial report, another 15 lights have turned up missing, said Mark Williamson, city spokesman. He said the missing lights are nearly 20 years old. ‘’The city installed 166 lights in 1988,’’ he said. ‘’They cost about $800 each.’’ The thefts took place between Dec. 10 and 14. ‘’There has been a lot of construction work going on down there,’’ Williamson said. He noted that the lights are heavy, although he didn’t know the weight, and said that stealing them was no easy task. ?EUR??,,????'??They had to be taken with some type of equipment,?EUR??,,????'?? he said.
