Landscapers Fined for Golf Ball

Landscapers in New Jersey better check for golf balls before mowing. That is because an Eatontown man has been awarded $725,000 for an eye injury he suffered in 2006 after being struck by flying glass when a golf ball traced back to the Eagle Oaks Golf and Country Club struck his car.

Thomas Guhl will receive $650,000 from the golf club and an additional $37,500 each from Canfield Lawn and Landscaping and a Farmingdale man, who were both also named in the suit. The ball was alleged to be on the resident’s lawn as it was being mowed and it was said that this landscaping company did not take the necessary precautions to guard against the possibility that the lawn mower could have launched the golf ball.

Guhl argued that Canfield Lawn and Landscaping should have checked the lawn before mowing. Moreover, he alleged the golf club failed to place netting along Asbury Avenue to prevent balls from leaving the course.

At the time of the injury, Guhl was treated at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune and later at Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia for a cut cornea in his right eye.
