Clay County Investigator Robert Dews has been in law enforcement for 14 years, and has been assigned to the Clay County environmental crimes unit for the last year.
The CCSO?EUR??,,????'?????<???????????????????????(R)?EUR??,,????'????s environmental crime unit works with the state Department of Environmental Protection in Jacksonville and occasionally with the U.S. Department of Environmental Protection.
?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????Often,?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????????? he claims, ?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????the people the landscape contractor [are] working for are charged large amounts of money to haul the debris to the dump. However, the contractor drops the stuff off in the woods and pockets the money the client has given him to pay the waste fees.?EUR??,,????'?????<?????????????????
Dews recently arrested two Putnam County men who dumped yard and landscaping waste near Inyo Court off C.R. 214.
Where financial gain is involved, any dumping is considered to be commercial, and is a felony, Dews said.
When trash is hauled in the back of pickups, it must be covered when the truck is moving. Occasionally, Dews and his partner check out a patrol car and drive around the county writing tickets for hauling uncovered trash as well.
Although the two recent alleged felons he apprehended were from south Putnam County, they had been hired to do landscaping by a Lake Region household.
Landscape Contractors should be aware of the possibility of similar enforcement measures in their area and ethically dispose of waste.
