Landscape Design of Proposed Golf Course Draws Top Architects

In Pierce County, Wash., a proposed golf project has drawn huge interest from our nation?EUR??,,????'?????<

The planned Chambers Creek Golf Course site offers spectacular panoramic views of neighboring islands, the Tacoma Narrows and Olympic Mountains. With a view of dunes, cliffs and an elevation change from sea level all the way up to 250 feet, the site has all the makings of an amazing golf course.

Pierce County recently issued a Request for Qualifications from eager golf course architects to design their vision?EUR??,,????'?????<

A nine-member committee of county, community and golf industry representatives reviewed 57 applications, and the top five were selected for the final review phase, held Jan. 20-21. The final architect should be selected by early February.

The finalists are:

  • Hurdzan/Fry Golf Course Design Inc., Columbus, Ohio and Lawrence Golf Designs Inc., Cave Creek, Ariz., Michael J. Hurdzan, principal
  • Cupp Design Inc., Atlanta, Ga., Robert E. Cupp, principal
  • John Harbottle Design, Tacoma, Wash., John Harbottle, principal
  • Robert Trent Jones II Golf Course Architects, Palo Alto, Calif., Robert Trent Jones Jr., principal
  • Phil Mickelson Design and Gary D. Stephenson, Celina, Tex., Phil Mickelson, principal

The proposed site lies in 930-acre Chambers Creek Properties, stretching along two miles of Puget Sound shoreline, including three miles of forested canyon.

According to Pierce County council members, the project would mean much more than a golf course?EUR??,,????'?????<

The golf course design will be finalized this summer, with construction beginning during the second half of the year and completing in late 2006 or early 2007.
