The Boston Globe recently reported on the Community Outreach Group for Landscape Design (COGdesign) in Waltham, Mass., a western suburb of Boston, which pairs volunteers (pro bono) landscape designers with community groups who pay an application fee and reimburse the designers’ expenses. Many of the designers are students or recent graduates from landscape programs. Their motivation is getting real-world community design experience and to add to their portfolios.

COGdesign was founded in 1995 by Lucia Droby and the late Rosalie Johnson while students at the Radcliffe Seminars in Landscape Design (now the Landscape Institute). COGdesign reports a core of devoted volunteers. Clients include public and private schools, parks, churches, municipal agencies, historic sites and community gardens.
