This past spring, Sarah Hermes was asked by her father to update the landscape at the office of their family-owned business so she decided to create a "completely edible landscape," that now serves as a testing ground for potential projects. "We are trialing a few different soils and organic maintenance practices and different plant life," she says. " We want to perfect some of our systems in order to provide these types of gardens to other customers." According to Hermes, the difference between an edible garden and an edible landscape is the element of aesthetic design. "In a garden, generally the number one priority is production of vegetables and fruit and it's usually separate from the rest of the landscape and is usually contained and planted in lines," Hermes states. "In an edible landscape, we are integrating edible plant material within the beautiful design of a landscape." The landscaping company has been inspired by what they see as an increased interest in self-grown food. Hermes feels that instead of a trend, this is more of a developing awareness taking place. "We're excited to learn and connect with the community because there are a lot of people doing a lot of amazing things," she says. The company realized that there were many logistical and feasibility issues associated with creating successful edible landscapes so they wanted to work them out on their own landscape before offering it as a service. Hermes sums up, "Our goal is to perfect the maintenance, design, and irrigation practices in our own garden and then start packaging edible landscape designs and promoting them to both homeowners and commercial properties."
