John Nespoli, 50, a resident of Collierville, Tenn., won the senior (50-54) shot put event at the World Masters Athletics Championship in San Sebastian, Spain, with a throw of 53 feet.
Nespoli, the owner of Germantown Landscape Co. in Memphis, earned a degree in Landscape Architecture at Mississippi State, where he also competed in the shot put.
Nespoli won the district and state senior title before winning the national competition in Pittsburgh on June 14, where he made a 50-54 senior record toss of 56.5 feet. He was then invited to compete at the 2005 World Masters Athletics Championship.
Nespoli recently donated his consultation services for the landscaping of the Sensory Garden in Memphis, a project of the Shelby Residential & Vocational Services (SRVS), a provider of comprehensive services to approximately 800 people with developmental disabilities in Memphis and Shelby County Tennessee. The project received a grant from Madonna Circle and the United Way and sent 50 volunteers to work on the project during its ?EUR??,,????'??Day of Caring,?EUR??,,????'?? Sept. 9. The ribbon cutting ceremony for the garden was on Nov. 1.
