Greg Applegate, ASLA was already one of the first certified arborists in southern California (#180 in 1985), and the first person in the nation to be designated a Registered Consulting Arborist (#365 in 1996) by the American Society of Consulting Arborists. On September 16, 2008 he was also certified by the Pacific Northwest Chapter of ISA as Certified Tree Risk Assessor ?EUR??,,????'?????<??????????????+ #444. So far he is the first person and the only person in California with this credential. The course has been recognized by the Workers?EUR??,,????'?????<????????????EUR??,,?? Compensation Board (WCB) of British Columbia, Canada, as the standard to be used for assessing tree risks in urban areas, and at the urban/rural interface. Until now the instruction and testing had been limited to members of the Pacific Northwest Chapter. Discussions are underway to bring this program to other chapters.
Under this program certified arborists are instructed and tested in hazard evaluation of trees. Tree risk assessment is a scientific process of investigating observable defects and their implications, to derive an estimate of risk.
Trees are rated numerically based on the likelihood of failure, the size of the part most likely to fail, what is most likely to be hit if it failed, and other risk factors.
