LAF/CLASS Fund Extends the Season of Giving Industry professionals noted for their expertise and generosity in giving back to their profession gathered at the Balboa Bay Club in Newport Beach, California on December 14th to support the Landscape Architecture Foundation California Landscape Architecture Student Scholarship Fund (CLASS Fund). A festive event to be sure, the annual Holiday Gala is also an important milestone in recognizing the fundraising organization's accomplishments. Notably Scholarship Chairman Bob Cardoza, FASLA, of NUVIS announced that the group's successful accumulation of $500,000 means they will be able to award the $17.5-22K in scholarships projected for 1996 "whether or not additional funds are raised during the year." Not one to rest on his laurels, however, Cardoza restated the Scholarship Committee's goal of raising $1 million in a fund and intent to award larger scholarships from the interest earnings. Speaking of laurels . . . . and I don't mean Lauris nobilis . . . Francis "Sully" Sullivan of Sullivan Concrete of Costa Mesa deserves special recognition for 15 years of active membership; having completed his second year of service as CLASS Fund's Chairman of the Board, Sully passed the chairman's gavel to the principal of John Hourian Associates for 1996. Hourian confirmed he will be recontacting former members and asking them to renew their commitment to the scholarship program. As always, a prize drawing raised some money and some Christmas spirit among the select crowd. Marty McPhee of South Counties Landscaping seemed to be the happiest winner: he was the winner of an LASN sweatshirt!
