LAF Suspends Spring Fundraising Campaign

CEO of LAF Calls for Support of Black Community

LAF is suspending their spring campaign to encourage supporters to help their communities.

Every spring, LAF holds a fund-raising campaign that helps provide monies that the organization uses to aid students, industry research, professional development, and more. However, the CEO of LAF, Barbara Deutsch, issued a statement saying that they are suspending the campaign for the next week in response to the recent social protests. They have received 89% of the target they were hoping to reach this spring and will continue raising funds outside of their spring campaign. Still, Deutsch is urging supporters to donate to organizations that support local and national Black communities.

In her statement, Deutsch said, "With the recent killings of Black people at the hands of law enforcement and the pandemic spotlighting centuries of structural racism and injustice-much of which has been manifest and reinforced by the built environment-LAF stands steadfast in our efforts to make equity, inclusion, and justice central tenets in the landscape architecture discipline."

Additionally, there was a push for LAF supporters to vote in the upcoming elections to back the candidates that best represent the individual's beliefs and ideals. She then reminds landscape architects of the power they hold as professionals who build up and create communities. Deutsch concludes the letter by saying, "We know that true change will take vigilance and unwavering commitment. Together we will continue to learn, share, and work to create a healthier, more just, equitable, and sustainable world."
