With Lady Bird Johnson?EUR??,,????'???s passing on July 11, 2007, we are reminded of her contributions to make U.S. landscapes more attractive. In 1982, Lady Bird (nee Claudia Alta Taylor) and actress Helen Hayes founded the National Wildflower Research Center at the University of Texas at Austin to help preserve North American native flora and landscapes. The center was later renamed the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center.
The center encompasses 279 acres and features about 650 species of Texas native plants in themed gardens, mostly from the central Texas hill country. Its Plant Conservation program helps conserve Texas?EUR??,,????'??? rare and endangered flora. The center also has a Native Plant Information Network database of more than 7,200 native species online (wildflower.org).
The center?EUR??,,????'???s education programs for children and adults teach people about their natural surroundings and how to grow native plants.
As First Lady, Lady Bird raised hundreds of thousands of dollars to beautify Washington, D.C. She lobbied for passage of the $320 million Highway Beautification bill, which passed in 1965. Known as the ?EUR??,,????'??Lady Bird Bill,” the legislation regulated the number of roadside billboards and replaced many of them with trees and wildflowers. The Texas wildflower program, however, dates back to 1932, when the Texas Highway Department hired Jac Gubbels, its first landscape architect, to maintain, preserve and encourage wildflowers and other native plants along rights of way. This program has expanded into full-scale vegetation management. TxDOT buys and sows about 30,000 pounds of wildflower seed each year.
She was also a spokeswoman for the Conservation of Public Lands Act and clean air and water legislation, which laid the groundwork for the formation of the Environmental Protection Agency in 1970.
In 1969, she founded the Texas Highway Beautification Awards, and in 1992, the LBJ Foundation established the national Lady Bird Johnson Conservation Award.
Lady Bird?EUR??,,????'???s other activities involved the Lyndon Baines Johnson Library and serving on the board of the National Geographic Society as a trustee emeritus.
